Holgate and Branthwaite must have been surprises last season that has changed the thinking on centrebacks. I’d still like another one but potentially Holgate and Mina look like first choice with Keane Branthwaite and maybe Gibson as cover. I’d love to swap out Keane for a faster better player but even if we don’t as long as Holgate and Mina stay fit it’s not the worse position In the team.

At some point Gibson will have to be given a chance, if not sell now, or he becomes the next Garbutt. We apparently paid (a total deal) of £6m for him, he is a left footed CB and can cover LB - both of which we need. Not sure what the point of buying these kinds of players is really if they are never given an opportunity - collectively an equal waste of money to some of our one-off panic buys.

We didn't pay £6m for him, it'll be buttons with performance/appearance add ons. So the fee doesn't really come into it until he gets a game. I doubt its as high as 6m anyway considering we signed him at youth level.

He wasn't bought for the first team, he was bought as a prospect and has to earn that chance. He apparently had a good loan spell at Fleetwood but that is only league 1, still a big jump. Those who see him every day will have a better idea of where he is at.

I will ask my mate who works at fleetwood in performance what they think of him.

Asked him; "He's very good, too early to play in the prem, but will be brilliant one day".

File under not even arsed. Much more pressing concerns in the middle of the park. getting that right should see an increase in performance through the side. At the moment we struggle to keep the ball, we struggle to create and we're very weak on the defensive side, the midfield is possibly the worst I've seen, definitely up there, the lack of effort is the most damning.
