Tbh despite being a fan of Barry I agree with you that he has been played too much and that there were times when he could have been rested a bit more. However not sure over the past eight weeks there were enough that would have made a great deal of difference.

Also given McCarthy's hamstrings seem to be game time related you could also argue that we should have rested James instead and played Barry/Besic earlier in the season and the whole sorry mess would have been avoided as James may not have got injured!

As you say let's see how things play out now we appear (cross fingers) to have both McCarthy and Gibson fit.

He's a great fill in and bound to be a great teacher for the younger players, but I realized with yesterday's match that he's too slow to get forward in attack and too slow to get back in defense. He usually has good positioning, but with his relative immobility he's a huge liability. If all are healthy, including wide players, I think he's little better than the 4th or 5th option at CM.

McCarthy
Besic
Barkley (4-3-3 or 4-2-2)
Oviedo
Baines
Barry
Gibson

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I don't see much future for him in this system. I thought he was great last year, but maybe it was the dynamism out wide that Everton is missing this go that actually covered his faults. Without that dynamism, he is forced to advance into positions he can't cover defensively.

Good point on the winger situation, think that has messed us up a lot and our defensive mistakes have probably also lead to our fullbacks staying further back as well.

There are a few games whose style of play make him a bad fit, those like Liverpool and Spurs that are played with a lot of pace, but otherwise with decent rest think he will be a good option. Not a fan of even Lahm playing in midfield tbh, let alone Baines/Oviedo so rate him much higher up the list of choices but it will be interesting to see if Ledson starts making it into the team next season.

I'm not a fan of Oviedo or Baines in midfield either, Oviedo especially given that he's the club's #2 or #3 wide option, but both have pace to play the position and allow McCarthy or Besic to sit. Barry's role is the sitting role and he's been quite awful at this, only easily masked when Distin was also in the side.

....it will be interesting to see how we fare without Barry. Hopefully we cope but amazing how often you realise how well somebody is doing when they're not there. I think Gibson is the more natural replacement in a very specialised position. We had a really good record with Gibson before Barry arrived.

Leicester were very good against Arsenal, the game against them is certainly no gimme. It will be tough.

Think Barry is fine in the sitting role as long as he is rested, uninjured and has some pace around him but guess we'll see!

Would like to see what Gibson can do, but he's had 4 league and 9 total appearances since 12/13. That's a long time off.

...absolutely. I'm a Besic fan but I fear he hasn't got the discipline (yet) for that position. By discipline I mean you really have to be careful to not do too much chasing and restrict yourself to a defined area. Fellaini said he struggled with this when Moyes tried him there. It's the reason (I think) why the likes of Barry and Carsley before him can play so many games despite their age.

Mate, bet when his suspension is over, he will walk straight back into the side!
