Blues must persuade Barry to turn his back on America to sign on a permanent basis at Goodison

Everton FC must persuade Gareth Barry to reject a move to Major League Soccer if they are to sign him on a permanent basis this summer.

The influential midfielder is yet to make his mind up on the next step once his lucrative contract with Manchester City expires next month.

Arsenal, Tottenham and AS Monaco have all been linked with the 33-year-old, but the ECHO understands that Barry is only weighing up two options; either staying at Goodison Park or heading Stateside.

One possibility for Barry is to become the star player and captain for City’s forthcoming MLS franchise New York City FC, which is set to launch in 2015.

However the former England international would not be short on offers from other American clubs should he decide to take his young family to the USA this summer instead.

Any potential permanent move to Merseyside would not be hampered by wage demands, with Barry fully aware the Blues could not match the bumper £125,000-a-week salary he has earned during his time at the Etihad stadium.

Money is not believed to be the major motivating factor in the defensive midfielder’s thinking though, rather whether or not to experience playing abroad before he hangs up his boots.

However, the Blues hope that his enjoyable spell at Goodison, when he has become a popular figure in the dressing room and close pals with midfield colleague James McCarthy may cause him to abandon the idea of crossing the pond or at least delay it for another season.

One compromise would be for Barry to agree a one-year deal with the Blues, leaving him free to join New York the season after next.

Either way, it remains to be seen whether tomorrow’s trip to Hull City will be Barry’s final appearance in a Royal Blue shirt.

But whatever happens the Everton players will be under instructions to treat the fixture without sentiment, but the same intensity as every other game this term.

Two year deal on £60k p/w, you know it makes sense Gareth. Sure you could have one last payday in the USA, but he doesn't need the money, and there's something special happening at Everton. The fans love him, he fits in absolutely spot on, and he can be the wise old head in the dressing room for Europe next year.

Sounds from interviews it's either Barry or another England 'international', could be Cleverley, Milner or a few others i'd guess at

I have no doubt he'll be here next season.

Think we need some "sign him up" chanting for him and rom against hull from our fantastic away fans!

Got the feeling the Barry deal is a trend we will see repeated with Martinez, loaning in vetreran players who have a point to proove alongside youngsters with similar points to proove, a good combo actually as an experienced loanie may rub off on the younger ones when they see how dedicated he is even being a loan

sounds as though theres a clause that we triggered. whereby taking him on loan and wanting to extend it to a permanent when he leaves on a free, we have to pay city 2.5mil quid.
Does this change people still wanting him?

Nope, 2.5mil is a steal for a proven Prem star and someone of that quality.
Only issue in my eyes are his wages.

Can't see that 2.5M thing is right. If it is you would imagine we've paid next to nothing having him this season. It can't go both ways...ie big fee last summer and this summer...there's just nothing to justify city asking for it.

For free he'd be a no-brainer. For £2.5m and realistic wages it is still a no brainer if you consider how big a role he's played this season and Gibson's injury record.

Personally, I think this story about the £2.5m fee is either being reported wrong or nonsense, it totally contravenes the Bosman ruling.

The only way I can see us paying a fee for him is if it was a loan fee, agreed at the start of the loan, but payed at the end. Which means Everton have to pay it anyway, even if we don't sign him.

Once Barry's contract at city expires they cannot demand a fee for him, he is free to go wherever he chooses.

You should always get the cash up front, tell 'em they can sniff it.
He's out of contract at City now anyway, what can they do?
