That's the way I interpreted the interview. He said there is "nothing we can do if they activate it". He didn't say it would be up to Deulofeu.

So unless told otherwise I view that as basically a loan for two years, where we are compensated for our trouble if they recall him after 12 or 24 months.

Not a chance Barca can sign Deulofeu without him agreeing to it.

Buying a player from a team and giving them first refusal is buying outright. Paying 2 million for a player with a clause of a buyback a season later which we cannot refuse is not buying outright.

Nah the new bit is Barcelona basically being able to take him back without the players' say so. Which in effect means the player may as well still be on a Barcelona contract and out on loan, subject to recall at the end of the loan period - which means the deal in my view should be illegal but oh well.

Just the impression I got from the wording by Martinez. He described an elaborate loan deal.

As said, I think that would be illegal in practice as you either have a player under contract or you don't, but I have a feeling that's the agreement.
