Hang on a second - England only a month ago won the U18 European Championships... beating Spain in the final.

The youth is there.

Its just without someone like Hodgeson and without the clubs taking the piss, then it's always going to be [Poor language removed] on a stage like this.

£6million for Capello is a disgrace though.

Fair enough, didn't think of that, but my point was more that the clubs need to realise they have to give these youth players a chance to fulfill their potential. With the Premierleague being so rich, clubs tend to sign every average foreigner they can get their hands on, instead of playing the patience game and bringing through their own youth players.

I remember an interview with Trevor Brooking about ten years ago. He was saying how English football needed to modernize, starting at grass roots level in order to produce technically and tactically more adept players. I think we all know we only have to look at this German side to see what that means.
Recently he was talking after the under 17 victory in the European Championship. It seems as if some of his ideas have been implemented but we're still waiting to reap the rewards. He concurred with what I'd read on threads here and match reports in the press (I didn't see any of the tournament). Basically the kids were playing some excellent football and in the final against a good Spanish side, both teams passing the ball on the ground with good movement and positioning.
I can only hope my impression is correct and we're finally on the right track. Because that was a harsh lesson today imo. We should try and learn it

I really don't know what went wrong, i mean, they were wearing the lucky all red kit, it was on the bbc and James Corden didn't shave his beard - were did it all go wrong?

I think you've failed to see the fact had Lampard's effort had stood England without a doubt would've played the more cautious approach. If that wasn't the case, JT and the rest of the defense would not have been caught flapping 70 yards up the pitch leaving the midfield to fill in.

You can believe what you want to believe mate. I'll tell you what I saw, though:

10 individuals all trying to be the f*ckin' hero.
No off the ball movement
Midfield/defence torn apart by one touch passing
Little harassing of the opposition
Little effort on loose balls
A couple of donkeys for CB's
And a squad who all look like they're on Paxil

One recipe for disaster, coming up...

wrong squad picked , players in the wrong position , wrong formation , wrong substituitions + 4 very poor performances says to me fabio has to step down.

as much as i think he is a complete con artist , i think harry redknapp would get the best out of our players and should be the next england manager.

as for the players.......
upson and johnson are rubbish
terry and cole have questionable characters
lampard and gerrard never hit the mark at international level
rooney ???? never showed up for the world cup.

i expect a big shake up.

Johnson.
Heskey.
Carragher.
Upson.
Barry.
Warnock.

I could go on.

Then the so called "superstars".

Didn't look very super today.

Gash with a capital Gash.

That Johnson was worse than a liability. I'm just glad he's a liverpool player.

Its nothing to do with anything other than passion, not 1 player on that pitch showed any.

They all have the talent, we see it week in, week out from MOST of those players.

No passion from the players, fake passion from the clueless Manager, who I doubt has ever played 4-4-2 in his whole career, why did he start now? How many frigging teams play 4-4-2 these days?

I honestly feel none of those players on the pitch care about the National team, it doesnt provide enough win bonus, all the deals they signed before the Tourny, so it doesnt even benefit their pockets to win.

Cluessless, passionless shithouses, im so glad not 1 Everton player made the squad.

This thing about improving technique has been around for decades. The setting up of places like Lilleshall was supposed to lead to a golden generation of excellently drilled players using their talents to the max. Ditto the club academies. I think English players have that technique but they just haven't got the mindset to go with it. Our Premier League might be the most exciting in the world (most of the time!), but it rely'son end to end stuff and getting the ball forward asap. It's littered with errors. I know that's all a bit glib, but the core is sound: technique is not the issue...poise and tactics (or rather the ability to comprehend tactics and carry them out) are the issue. Compare that load of hurry scurry tripe with the way most other teams at the world cup play. I think there's only Ireland and Norway (two heavily EPL influenced nations) that play in the same vein.

NAH. I'm not accepting this. At all youth levels - we've been at comparable levels winners or finalists to any other league.

U17 championship winners. Wasn't Rodwell a losing finalist in 2007 too.

2009 U21 european championship finalists ...

Its just how its being applied at senior level.

Only two of Everton's FA Youth Cup winning side in 98 ended up playing for the first team....

Ossie & Hibbert.

Being good young doesn't make you techincally good when your older all the time

The England under 21s nearly won something recently aswell, mainly by putting players behind the ball and trying to overpower opposition players. It can work at that level against inexperienced youngsters but it's of no use when you move up to the senior team. You have to have composure, technique and intelligence, certainly if you want to be a top of the range team.

There's far too much emphasis on winning when really, under 21s and under should be all about development. These kids should be learning to play football and develop there skills. I didn't see the U18s so I can't really comment on that, maybe they have got it right and there is a generation of skilled players coming through. But I'm not sure that is the case, when you see people like Trevor Brooking being interviewed you don't get that feeling.
