Golf 2022....

Is there no thread for people who actually play golf? I’m only just getting into it so all this PGA chat is way above me. I’ve never followed it before, I’ve started just to put myself back in my place when I think I’ve had a decent round

If Graham McDowell says he's no politician he certainly sounds like one! He's proud to help Saudi buff up their image and even cites the Khashoggi case.
What a complete rat!

What's the go with the PGA being arrogant etc, genuine question as i watch golf but don't read anything outside of the leaderboards about the sport
Maybe arrogance was the wrong word.

They're biggest issue with the LIV series is that it will reflect badly on the PGA with sponsorships etc.

Between the USPGA and DP Tour the world is neatly divided up thanks very much.

As always, it comes down to money. Saudi has more, they are worried.

They were sure that the threats of bans would mean nobody would sign up. Of course players signed up, and more will.

They need to come to an agreement with the LIV tour pretty quick on a shared calendar before they lose all their 'stars' forever.

If they stick to their guns the Ryder Cup will soon be contested by none of the world's top players, they'll all be barred from entry.

I'm sure we had a thread a year or two back, somebody from North Wales was going to start playing and they started a thread.

Edit:

Thread 'Im considering playing golf' https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/im-considering-playing-golf.113398/

Sadly, locked

@johnjoeefc how did you get on?

Big changes ahead.

Does this effect the likes of SKY who have the TV rights to the PGA tour

Does the European tour now merge with the PGA

The Ryder cup should be contested by Americas and Europe's best, it will lose its prestige if its not.

There wasn't nothing wrong with the game of golf the way it was, there's more than enough money in it for everyone, their are tour players who haven't won anything in years and are multi millionaires.

This LIV stuff is boss.

Funny how a lot of people are calling the players mercenaries for ditching the PGA, yet the PGA have monopolised all the best players for decades. A little bit of competition is healthy, and let’s face it, if you trace most peoples money who have extensive wealth, it goes back to blood money.

I hope more of the top players jump ship, it’ll work out better for the fans in the end as they’ll have to come to some sort of compromise and it will add spice to the tournaments where both sets of players play in it as one.

That's one of the worries the tour has. The broadcasters won't pay the huge fees if 10/20/50% of the top players defect to LIV, especially when (for now at least) its free on YouTube.

They'll certainly have to get everyone around the table and work out a calendar that suits everyone.

If course it should, the PGA/DP acting like the kid who owns the football needs to have a think about their stance.

Yep, it's nuts. The LIV have just bought Dustin Johnson for half of Newcastlelol

I don't like change in sport in general. Something like the IPL cricket has no interest to me and this new Saudi tour has the same vibes for me.

Throw it all in here if you want!
My first proper round of golf ever, apart from seaside crazy golf ?, was at Bootle Muni in 1971 aged 12, with my Dad and two of his mates! But didn’t really take it too seriously until I was about 30 when I gave up playing cricket because of a dodgy knee! Lowest handicap I got down to was 7.
Best course I’ve ever played is The Ailsa at Turnberry, followed by Wentworth, and Royal Birkdale!
Last handicap was 10, but unfortunately haven’t played for over four years because of the dodgy knee that made me give up cricket! I’d love to get back out there again but the knee is still stopping me ???!

Same mate they only change any sport for financial reasons not for the better of the sport. (world cup mid season-and LIV)

I'm amazed so many very very wealthy golfers have jumped ship to LIV, but then i suppose if someone is going to offer you 100mil+ just for a signature then..............

It will be interesting to see how this new tour fares and what changes come about on the other tours. For basketball, it was the ABA that introduced the 3-point line later incorporated by the NBA.
It seems like the big ideas are 54 holes, no-cuts, and a team component in addition to the individual stroke play.
I do think the new tour needs quite a few more big names to make a go of it.
Loads of South Africans—-almost 20% of the field

Can't say any of those changes appeal to me at all
