Golf 2024

Scheffler falling out of bed after his wife having a kid and taking time off to dunk a 2 on a par 4 on his first hole.

Guy is a savant

Great to see all the big guns, generally, having a good first round as well. The 3 top favourites with the bookies appear to be well on their way, and I've seen a lot of experts saying this could actually be the one Xander finally gets and he was great betting value coming in.

I still think he'll choke, mind
I think we would have to go back to Lee Westwood to find a time when everyone was less convinced by the #3 ranked player in the world's prospects of winning a major. (Westwood, of course, made it all the way to #1.)

I must say that I did not have 'police' on my 'things that can stop Scottie Scheffler' bingo card. Sounds like he was thinking, "They must have provisions for the golfers," and the police were thinking, "No, no we don't."

The Louisville Police Department has released a mugshot of him booked into jail. Seems like they're doing everything possible to make sure he misses his tee time and gets DQ'd.

This should lead to an interesting political kerfuffle. I'm sure the mayor will be getting an earful from corporate interests who want the tournament (and Ryder Cup) back in the future, as well as the PGA for the police affecting the integrity of the competition. The PGA could move his tee time again, but that sets a precedent they don't want.

This is the very definition of extenuating circumstances

Sure, but "we move individual tee times for no man" is also well-established precedent.

Jason Sobel, who knows his stuff, reported (accurately) that USGA Rule 5.3a provides for the tournament committee to determine that exceptional circumstances prevented the on-time start, and waive any penalty. That's probably the route the PGA would have to go.

I've seen reports that Scheffler was released on his own recognizance. The same reports indicate he should be able to make the 10:08 local tee time. Local residents interviewed seemed more skeptical, given traffic and the two points involved. It would be priceless if the police had to provide for an escort back, so he could make the tee time.

I used to love golf. Took me old mum to all the Opens when they were in Scotland.
She'd plant herself in the stand at the 18th with her knitting and watch them all come in. Her favourite was Nicklaus and why not?
I would walk the course and take a pint at occasional beer tents. Fantastic days.
We met along the way Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Forsyth, Ronnie Corbett, Greg Norman and, famously, Michael Crawford who was appearing in a show in Edinburgh. He was so charming and shared his bag of boiled sweets with mum!

He's gonna make his time, but won't have time for all his usual process for warming up

Scottie is an assassin on the course. I cannot wait to see what he does today with all that happened this morning. I'm guessing the betting handle on the tourney and Scottie's round today are going to be crazy compared to a normal golf betting day

I wouldn't be surprised if he rolls out there and shoots a smooth 67

That Darlington bloke who was there and reported it said that Scheffler didn’t realise it was police and just thought it was security.

Even if it’s “just” security, surely you stop and follow their instructions?

And you would have to imagine if it's a fatal traffic collision there would be police lights on especially when it's still dark. Seems like a case of I'm a high profile person I won't stop for no one

Schefflers released a statement saying it was a misunderstanding of what he thought he was being asked to do and he never intended to disregard any instructions given to him.

That Darlington bloke was clear that Scheffler pulled around their car so clearly wasn’t stopping,
