Gordon Lee RIP

Really sad news. He was the manager when I got my first season ticket and first started going to away matches so that team will always be special for me. His early team played some great football and scored bags of goals including two 6-0s and two 5-1s away from home. For some reason, the next season he became more defensive and despite an unbeaten run until Christmas we were drawing too many matches and faded away to finish fourth. League form in his final 2 seasons was dire but both years had memorable cup runs. He seemed really down to earth and a true man of the people which was reflected in the connection his players had with the fans at the time.

Above all, he ended 7 years of misery and made Phil Thompson "as sick as a parrot".

Gordon Lee derby interview

Saw some exciting times, exciting games, classy players, what have we got now ? Still can't forget about his dislike about Mackenzie. lol He had about as much fashion sense as I did. As others have mentioned, there but for the grace of God we should have won something, barring a lack of luck and a tosspot of a referee - R.I.P

Sorry to buck the trend, but he was never my cup of tea.
Dont know where the story comes from he nearly won the league, we were streets behind Forest and the other lot, and highest we finished was 4th.
Signed the best number 6 in the country in Colin Todd, then played him at right back, preferring to play Billy Wright next to Lyons.
His persistent obsession with a bang average Geoff Nulty drove me mad, all because he "worked hard"
If ever there was a manager who didnt get the school of science motto, it was Gordon.
He thought because he upset Newcastle fans by selling their star player, McDonald, he could do it with Everton fans and McKenzie.
Then replaced McKenzie with a second division yard dog ( Mick Walsh ) the brother of the other Everton Walsh who stole a living from our club.
Walsh scored two goals in total and was sold to QPR by February.
Claimed in an interview to have given Megson and Borrows their debuts, but he didnt.
Megson was bought from Plymouth and Howard Kendall gave Borrows his debut.
Sorry, but he was never my cup of tea

When being asked why Duncan McKenzie had been left out, he replied to the reporter.
" If I want to see stars, I will look in the sky"
