Greatest Gigs

Yeah, he's done his time...and so have we but I can imagine when he was top of his game he would have been ridiculously brilliant.

Groups I would have loved to have seen in their pomp - The Who, Queen, Simple Minds and not forgetting...the Rolling Stones.
Seen Simple minds in a small compact venue up here....outstanding tbh.
The current Queen is still a good show,Lambert was a good front man tbh.

I’ve been to loads of festivals and seen some big bands but stand alone gigs:

knebworth- 96. I absolutely loved the prodigy so I accompanied my mates who all loved Oasis. The bootleg beatles and the charlatans were on as well and John squire was trotted out for a bit of guitar masturbation on champagne supernova. Musically they were all excellent, my overriding memory is of the hundreds of plastic bottles of urine being thrown in to the air and soaking us all as we were made to wait for the Manchester cokeheads to get on!

Massive attack - Brixton academy 98. Very green baby, very green… absolutely brilliant.

Kings of Leon - the white horse? 2003 High Wycombe. Lots of bands with small set lists playing inaudible shizzle and then these guys walked out with mullet/tash combos and T-shirts which were 2 sizes too small. They absolutely blew me away, they were incredible. A shame they moved away from their rawness of the first couple of albums and started playing radio friendly [Poor language removed]. it was in the dive just around the corner from my old halls of residence. The pub used to have the “Sunday sport girls” parading about with nothing but a pint glass asking for change. Not on that night like but a very surreal and seedy venue.

Radiohead - Earl’s Court 2003. Somehow sounded better than the cd album! Absolutely crazy how tight and musically gifted they are.

Ryan Adams- Liverpool Royal court 2004. Fell off the stage during the gig and broke his wrist. I will never forget that gig, ever 😂

Supergrass - Shepherd’s Bush empire. 2004. I’ve always liked Supergrass, very musically underrated. They were incredible that night.

I never got to see the stone roses, Prince, Iggy pop, David Bowie, Queen, Led zeppelin, pink floyd, soundgarden, Nirvana, Idles, wu tang clan, Jurassic 5 or The roots live which makes me sad. I have hope with some on the list though.

Have to admit the Queen 'Bohemian Rhapsody' film was superb and the actor who played FM was outstanding. Thought it was a well constructed biopic (if that is the correct word...probably not) of the bands history and would have sold my crown jewels to have been at Wembley for Band Aid instead of getting p*ssed in the pub and not realising how good they were on the day until many moons later.

As for Simple Minds so glad they are still going strong. Missed an opportunity in about 1984 to go see them in Paris. Still kick myself!

The Replacements: September 6, 1987 @ Liberty Lunch in Austin, TX. I was very concerned the band would be crap without Bob Stinson. I was wrong. The energy in the room that night was magic. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-replacements/1987/liberty-lunch-austin-tx-33945825.html

Best recent show was Richard Thompson: May 1, 2018 @ Tobin Center in San Antonio, TX. The first, and only, solo acoustic show of his I've seen. He opened for Jason Isbell and after Thompson's set, I was completely disinterested in Isbell. Absolutely stunning. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/rich...-performance-hall-san-antonio-tx-bec55f2.html

Also jealous, I love The Replacements but I imagine they were broken up long before I started listening to them by way of Westerbergs Suicaine Gratification

The two I go back to most being special are Lenny Kravitz at Glastonbury in 93 because I was in the bit between the stage and the crowd. Likewise Spin Doctors in 94 but was actually at the back of the stage. It's not like SD were particularly special but seeing it from that vantage in front of that size crowd gave a small insight to what it is like for the performers.

Other great ones are:

Garbage at Portsmouth just after version 2.0 was released
Skunk Anansie and then a couple of weeks later Lightning Seeds at Exeter uni in 1996.
U2 at the millennium stadium (with The Killers and Starsailor) 2005
REM at the same venue around the same time.
Tears for fears come back tour at the CIA
Depeche Mode at Twickenham a few days ago.

Entranced by that stage and backdrop. Sunset and then the city lighting up if it's oriented right must be a spectacle and a half.

The 12 times I saw Elliott Smith are at the top of the list obviously, but Bowie and Nick Cave at Glastonbury were right up there.

Also Radiohead in 97 was a special thing. Saw them again a few years later supported by Clinic (who were always brilliant) and it was great to see the obvious influence those Crosby weirdos had on Radiohead
Crikey! I always wondered if your name was a reference - Would have loved to see him just the once

My god that's a bill! If Thompson had delved into his 'Bright Lights' stuff that would have been incredible

Love Isbell too

The Clash toured down under in Feb 1982. I begged & begged my parents to let me go, they thought at 14 I was too young. Probably right but it killed me. My mates & I were obsessed with them. Used to watch Rude Boy over & over 🤣

Parents let me see Madness a year later. I would have given ten Madness gigs to see the Clash once.
Actually, completely getting my dates mixed up. After posting last night I lay in bed thinking about the gigs of my youth 🤣

Clash toured Australia in Feb 82. Madness Oct 82. For some reason my oldies were ok with Madness but not the Clash. Maybe they were closet Ska fans.

Other memorable gigs back in the day - mostly international bands.

* Dead Kennedys 1983 - that was superb.
* Public Image Ltd 1984 - Mr Lydon was getting a bit too commercial for my liking at that point. Still good to see him.
* Anti Nowhere League - 1984 or 85 can't remember, I do remember that the gig was complete mayhem.
* Johnny Thunders 1986 - Glen Matlock on bass, Jerry Nolan on drums.
* Flamin Groovies 1986 - amazing band & amazing to see them live even without Roy Loney.
* The Cult 1987 - I know I went because I got a tour t-shirt. Can't remember much else. Was sliding into some fairly bad habits by that stage 😵‍💫
* Nick Cave 1987 (I think) - Your Funeral...My Trial tour
* The Saints 1986 or 87 - this guy I knew got into a fight with a bouncer, I remember that.

Lots of Aussie bands as well, but probably most aren't well known overseas - Hoodoo Gurus, Lime Spiders, Strange Tenants, Sunnyboys, Mark of Cain, Exploding White Mice, Blue Ruin, Scientists, etc, etc.
