Greatest Gigs

Tbh my favourite live music memories were going to a yearly festival called Wysing Polyphonic.

I had never heard of 70% of the line up when it gets announced (which is very unusual for me), it's in the middle of nowhere in the Cambridgeshire countryside, 300 people and the stages consist of a shed and a small aircraft hanger. Half the artists are just hitting a steel bar and putting it on a loop or something, from all over the world. It was so relaxed and only £30. There hasn't been one since COVID. Moor mother was there before she got 'big'

Other than that, it was ATP festivals... Which again are no more

Actually, completely getting my dates mixed up. After posting last night I lay in bed thinking about the gigs of my youth 🤣

Clash toured Australia in Feb 82. Madness Oct 82. For some reason my oldies were ok with Madness but not the Clash. Maybe they were closet Ska fans.

Other memorable gigs back in the day - mostly international bands.

* Dead Kennedys 1983 - that was superb.
* Public Image Ltd 1984 - Mr Lydon was getting a bit too commercial for my liking at that point. Still good to see him.
* Anti Nowhere League - 1984 or 85 can't remember, I do remember that the gig was complete mayhem.
* Johnny Thunders 1986 - Glen Matlock on bass, Jerry Nolan on drums.
* Flamin Groovies 1986 - amazing band & amazing to see them live even without Roy Loney.
* The Cult 1987 - I know I went because I got a tour t-shirt. Can't remember much else. Was sliding into some fairly bad habits by that stage 😵‍💫
* Nick Cave 1987 (I think) - Your Funeral...My Trial tour
* The Saints 1986 or 87 - this guy I knew got into a fight with a bouncer, I remember that.

Lots of Aussie bands as well, but probably most aren't well known overseas - Hoodoo Gurus, Lime Spiders, Strange Tenants, Sunnyboys, Mark of Cain, Exploding White Mice, Blue Ruin, Scientists, etc, etc.

Think I'd much rather see PiL than the Sex Pistols

Saw the Chemical Brothers in 2019. Never been a massive die hard fan of theirs but seeing them live absolutely blew me away.

Arctic Monkeys in Offenbach 2010 also blew me away how good they were live.

Peter Hook in NYC 2018. Purely because it's the closest I'll ever get to hearing Joy Division live.

Stones in Berlin 2018 was an experience.

Libertines in Frankfurt 2022. Was quite a big fan of theirs 20 years ago but never saw them in that time. So seeing them brought back good memories of my youth.

The Cure in 2016 and 2022 in Frankfurt. Brilliant both times.

Radiohead, The Smile, Thom Yorke solo, always brilliant.

Paul Weller was very good live too although I don't tend to listen to much of his stuff generally.

I think the last two albums have turned Arctic Monkeys into one of the British best bands ever, and I don't even really like them that much. They are very good at what they do, and I've seen them live 3 times (pre first album and 2 more recently at festivals) and they're pretty much faultless

I spend a lot of my time sticking up for them these days, which is odd seeing as I don't even really consider myself a fan lol

Seeing the Pistols pre the Grundy incident would have been amazing. After Grundy & then when Sid came in I get the feeling that punk became somewhat of a bandwagon. Once Matlock was gone they lost their spark - certainly in terms of writing new material. That's just my take but I wasn't there.

I was in London when they reformed in 1996 & I had the chance to see them, but couldn't be bothered. Not sure if I regret it or not.

I like PIL, but I like them in bits & pieces.

Yeah I was genuinely surprised how good they were when I saw them, at the time I saw them I would have classed them as the best live act I'd seen. Not many bands manage to evolve like they have over such a long period of time. Hard to believe it's almost 20 years since the hype was building up around them before their 1st album.

Mrs J reminds me that one of the best gigs we went to was , believe it or not , Earth, Wind and Fire at North Sea Jazz Festival in Ahoy Rotterdam.

I went for the whole weekend and saw Phil Woods , Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis ( all fantastic).

Mrs J flew in for the Saturday and really wanted to see EWF. Not my thing but honestly they were absolutely fantastic.

Afterwards we saw Oscar Petterson in what , I think , turned out to be his last performance. He was a shadow of himself and played laconically rather than his usual joyous style. It was like he knew what was around the corner. What a priviledge to be in the same room as greatness.

An epic weekend.

Loved the late 70's disco era and EWF were one of the best of the Disco groups

Ive been going to concerts since the 70’s and have seen just about everyone but I gave up going to stadium gigs, sound quality and ridiculous ticket costs annoy me. Prince was the last I went to, he was incredible.
Tears for Fears at the Royal Albert hall were brilliant, that’s a great venue.
Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Robert Plant, Ian Hunter are all at the top of the list but
probably my favourite gig was Larry Carlton, Steely Dan guitarist at the Band in the wall. Incredible guitar in an intimate venue.
