Greatest Gigs

Some of the most memorable gigs aren't the ones with superstars but something happens or there is an intimacy to the gig.

I can think of 2 fairly recent.

In 2017 ( I think ) a little known Scottish sax player called John Burgess played at Southport Jazz Festival. I had come across him in an obscure jazz magazine and had 4 CDs by him. In the interval I sought him out and bought him a beer and then bored him by relating how much I loved his playing ( a lot like Ben Webster) . He thought I was taking the piss and had been put up to it by his band. Only when I could prove an intimate knowledge of his music did he accept my appreciation. Then he was like my best mate and gave me a recording that he had never released with the pianist Liam Noble.

In 2019 I saw Gordon Giltrap the guitarist in a tiny club in Barnoldswick. The place was so small I was literally sat 5 feet in front of him and he kept asking me if there was anything I wanted him to play.
The club gigs are usually the best. Jerry Cantrell giving Mike Inez garbage while he smoked a cigarette (illegally) just off-stage was a riot. "Come on, man, you can't wait fifteen minutes?" I have tons of stories from these.

Pro tip: if you take kids in the right age range to these, you end up with swag.

outweighs the kidnapping charges?

Clash - London Calling tour
Buzzcocks supported by Joy Division.
Early human league supported by Teardrop Explodes and The Beat (Siouxsie in the crowd)
Really Early Pogues at the Cricketers Oval was a riot.
Gang of 4 - Eric’s.
Springsteen - river tour
Prince - for sign of the times was brilliant
Loads of indie stuff over the years - Pavement - Mercury Rev -

My life was bands and Everton as a teen.

I first got into the Clash - because in Clash City Rockers when they say “Forever tonight”
I thought they were saying
“For Everton aye”

Seen him twice.
Pittodrie 98 was decent.
2017 at the AECC outdoor was poor.
He played up here 2 weeks ago,I'm not paying those prices though.
Yeah, he's done his time...and so have we but I can imagine when he was top of his game he would have been ridiculously brilliant.

Groups I would have loved to have seen in their pomp - The Who, Queen, Simple Minds and not forgetting...the Rolling Stones.

The Replacements: September 6, 1987 @ Liberty Lunch in Austin, TX. I was very concerned the band would be crap without Bob Stinson. I was wrong. The energy in the room that night was magic. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-replacements/1987/liberty-lunch-austin-tx-33945825.html

Best recent show was Richard Thompson: May 1, 2018 @ Tobin Center in San Antonio, TX. The first, and only, solo acoustic show of his I've seen. He opened for Jason Isbell and after Thompson's set, I was completely disinterested in Isbell. Absolutely stunning. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/rich...-performance-hall-san-antonio-tx-bec55f2.html
