Green light for the Super League?

And if you look.at how often teams from outside the "top 4" leagues reach the semi or even quarter finals of the champions league, compared to 20 or 30 years ago, it seems to also be a closed shop, even if they call it open.

I know it is not quite the same, but I see enough similarities to not see the new version as a radical change.
I think the main difference is that it's actually quite simple for one of these clubs to blitz their own participation at the top table by being terrible, like Chelsea have. Under these new proposals it would be really difficult to do, and it would take numerous seasons to do it.

Great news this as long as the utter filth who take over Everton don't agree to put us into some minor Euro League Division.

We are all dinosaurs. Look at the comments under the Perez announcement today. Loads of kids calling him ‘lit’ and ‘the goat’ etc. Young fans support players, not clubs as we do. They want an NBA/NFL style system where they can watch ‘Shack vs Kobe’ matches every single week, and argue over who is ‘the goat’ on Twitter and TikTok. Unfortunately the premier league and domestic football will not survive without eyes on it. Clubs like Everton will go bust because of the amount of debt we are in. All this means for us ‘legacy’ fans is that we get our weekends back to persue other hobbies and watch ‘the glory days of football’ on the history channel.

The only thing i am unsure about on the new plans is how teams qualify for it. In the press release it is mentioned that there will be 3 leagues and teams can get relegated and promoted between the 3 leagues. what it doesn't say is how teams qualify in the first place.

Teams should only play in Europe if they have done well domestically, or won another European competition in my view.

Or does it mean that as there are 64 teams in the ESL all 20 teams from the premier league are in it? That would seem like too high a number from one country but who knows.

If they said that EPL received 8 places in the new format, 4 in the top league, 2 in the middle and 2 at the bottom and those places were determined by premier league position and winning the domestic cups from the previous season, I don't think many people would have an issue with it, if they were fans of a premier league club.

My gut feeling is that this is set up to serve clubs in the top 5 leagues essentially and clubs from the other 50 uefa countries will be marginalized or excluded

It's like winning the league and qualifying for the uefa conference league as a result.

Its a terrible idea mate.
Well, my perspective is this: end the PL and while we're about it get rid of those clubs who have been handed preferential treatment by them and leave the rest of us plus 6 from the Championship as an English top flight.

The new body could implement a 10 year ban on those other club's returning.

The money tree would largely disappear but not to SPL levels of poor funding. We'd be like the French League or something.

Suits me down to the ground in an ideal world.

But that would only be year 1. What do you do in year 2 when your 4 clubs are still in the top tier but 3 of them aren't in the top 4 in the Premier League? This format just doesn't work in terms of competitive merit.

The other advantage of this is that rich foreigners won't want to own our clubs anymore.

I would prefer the PL stays intact. The 2 reasons why a super league is even being proposed is cos RM and Barca are skint. Not sure I want to destroy our league for their benefit.

They stay there mate. Unless they get relegated to the Gold division, in it forever. For an outside/uninvited club to get anywhere near, they have to qualify for the Blue division domestically, finish top 2, then again in Gold, top 2, then into the ESL.

Magic innit?

I know, which means there is no reason for any team that's in the Premier League to bother trying unless they're going to win it or get relegated.

Not sure what they "win"! European Blue champions? Or Gold?

Not that we are likely to any time soon, but UEFA CL or Conference has way more meaning to me.
