Green light for the Super League?

Jesus freaking Christ.

PL is corrupt so let’s join (checks notes) the European Super League.

You clearly don't understand what the ESL actually is.

It's essentially a midweek competition that would in effect rival the CL not a replacement to the PL on the weekend.

If Real + Barca want to get it off the ground but the top 6 in England + Bayern, PSG & Atletico Madrid all turn it down, they will need to turn to big clubs not in the elite to get it off the ground.

In essence that would be clubs like Everton, Juventus, Sevilla, Roma, Aston Villa, Newcastle etc.

The current UEFA / PL model and FFP is designed to keep the scabs at the top and clubs like us away from the pie. Now if the ESL dangled revenue infront of clubs like us that was akin to CL revenue (or more) we would be absolutely stupid to turn it down.

The PL likely could not chuck us out either especially if a few big clubs like Villa, Newcastle, WHU also went along with it as it would damage the product.

Hasn't the European cup been replaced by a superleague for the last 25 years anyway? I don't see this new incarnation as being anything really all that different
In a way but if you look at the details of this it’s basically closed even if they call it open. If you were to qualify for the ESL in its second year having won your league say (think of Leicester). For you to then play in the equivalent of the Champions League (which should be their right) they would have to finish in the top 2 of the Blue and then Gold leagues before they get a chance to do what they could now. All the while trying to stay in your domestic league.

It’s a joke of a format and the fact they have the temerity to call it open is hilarious.

That wouldnt answer my "What money?" though.
I’m confused. You said “what TV money? You aren’t charging for it”. I just was clarifying they are charging for it so there will be TV money to be distributed to the clubs.

In the press release they say you will be able to watch matches for free which is technically true but I would say deliberately misleading.

And if you look.at how often teams from outside the "top 4" leagues reach the semi or even quarter finals of the champions league, compared to 20 or 30 years ago, it seems to also be a closed shop, even if they call it open.

I know it is not quite the same, but I see enough similarities to not see the new version as a radical change.

I just saw it was free to watch. Ergo, what TV money? Ads get nowhere near the subs income. But anyrate, either way, a super league needs the super clubs, and that doesnt just mean RM and Barca.

edit. Oh, if you pay, it is ad free?

The type of sheep fan that we are talking about will go along with whatever the real fans are saying. The real kopites and mancs aren’t going to allow themselves to be replaced by the sheep; the real fans will oppose this nonsense!

Then there’s going to be a wealth of opposition from the majority of the clubs that would have to be part of that three tiered nonsense Euro league.

Why would the likes of Sevilla, Everton, Aston Villa, West Ham etc agree to be part of this BS system? Especially, if it’s going to completely obliterate their domestic leagues that they are also competing in?

There’s way more opposition than support for this nonsense imo.
Plus the African and Asian "fans" might make a lot of noise online but their financial support is for the most part, actually negligible.
Won't buy official viewing services, don't buy official merchandise, don't attend games etc.

Yeah. And they will also be talking to broadcasters about having traditional TV deals too.

My guess is someone at broadcast hq has dreamed up 'super Sunday' every Sunday, where they get to hype european football royalty as schlock to the punters, Juve Barca and it's only bloody live here on saudi tv, sponsored by emirates and yokohama tyres, "make sure your jet stay on the runway", followed by Bayern vs manutd... etc etc

With differing nations pushing different ingame and HT ads to the highest bidders. Hell, I can even see different home shirts and sponsors for differing competition tie ins.

"Tonight's var is sponsored by gilette razors, if you want your journalists threatened try us..." "bud zero, it's actually water so isn't all so woke after all..." and the nightmare goes through the gears.

All of this already happens
