Green light for the Super League?

Lost in all the headlines and clubs making announcements of fealty, is the acknowledgement that UEFA & FIFA were found to be monopolies and in breach of open competition

From there, we’ll see what it leads to because a monopoly is never good for anyone
It depends if you see them as a business or governing body. They are both in truth.
The PL began the grasping culture that has ruined the game. I dont care what they do anymore. It was stolen from us long ago.

It’s the most lucrative league in the world.

It actually exists, and isn’t an endless daydream that will never happen.

But more importantly, football fans NEED to have a domestic league, especially in England.

Even the Chelsea Tory boys were dead set against the daydream, as they realised that their club would literally become a global franchise, where ‘Chelsea’ will be paying ‘Real Madrid’ at a ‘home match’ in Bangkok at 3 o’clock in the morning. Nobody wants that, especially if it comes at the expense of your domestic league!

If it came to it, which it won’t, the other Premier League clubs would also be able to go their own way and start their own league if necessary.

I'd quite happily replace Liverpool and Manchester United with Celtic and Rangers tbh, and I think Everton v Rangers at BMD will be far more entertaining than Chelsea v Madrid in Bangkok!

Aberdeen could replace Spurs, and Hibs and Hearts could replace Arsenal and City. Maybe we could offer a place to University College Dublin, they’d soon grow into a juggernaut with PL money.

I hold the opinion that the Sky Six need the PL more than the PL needs the Sky Six, but it’s all a load of nonsense that isn’t going to happen anyway imo.
I don't mean any disrespect, and I understand what your saying. But the comments re: Oh we'll have Celtic and Rangers in our league, is exactly what this ESL is aiming for.
This whole thing is robbing the individual leagues, if the clubs want to go for individual gain, fine go. But their home league must hold them to account.

Barcelona and Real have already shown an interest, German teams have declined iirc?

Correct, I'm just furthering the question of why the PL clubs would even consider giving rival clubs (RM, Barca, Bayern, PSG) a better platform to compete with them in European competitions.

English clubs have no issue with making money.

Why would they share the wealth?

The pot increases so they would earn more money and it would be more guaranteed as they would not have to negotiate qualifying through the domestic leagues

The caveat is I suspect there would be a risk to their EPL revenue being impacted. I suspect broadcasters have protected themselves against this type of event that will result in a diluted and less competitive product. Future deals would surely drop dramatically in value

Well, they might get more money but they lose a competitive edge.

A lot of these clubs have huge fanbase due to success, if they stopped winning fans will just go and support other teams.

It wont stop the stupid and greedy, but the clever owners know, which is why only Real and Barca are the 2 clowns still going.

We definitely would. There's no chance of them leaving the Premier League.
Sorry not been following properly I assumed this breakaway league would just be then playing a league season against each other and they would ignore everything else.

Well, they should be thrown out of the EPL anyway if they set up the league, and they would have far too many games to play anyway surely if they stayed

Agree its not but this new competition in it original form was basically another monopoly. All the big rich teams stayed in it every season regardless, hoovered up most of the the money generated and a few lesser clubs fought over scraps and a seat at their table.

The competition itself was a joke.
We already know the original plan has been scrapped so no point to consider that a barometer. The mere fact that so many were eager for it at first underscores the lack of free market competition to begin with. So there is a path and it's not simply the status quo

They aren't both, that's the point. They are a business that acted like a tyrannical govt

There may be futility in it, no question, since money absolutely ruining the game but competition forces evolution

True. But the duopoly of Real Madrid and Barcelona - two of the most corrupt and utterly self-serving clubs in world football - is even worse. UEFA, at least, have to give lip service to the pyramid and look after the game as a whole. Real and Barca simply want to line their own pockets and to hell with the rest.

I've no sympathy for the Ugly Sisters of Spanish football. They have sold their souls for money and have reached their ceiling. They have spent decades undermining the rest of the Spanish league by awarding themselves the vast majority of TV money, screwing the rest, and wondering then why the others are not serious rivals to them in the way that 6 or 7 clubs in England make that league compelling by comparison. I have sympathy for the big clubs in small TV markets who are unable to compete with the Big 5 League clubs simply by dint of an accident of geography. But Perez and Laporta are mafiosi.

In the end, we will have the usual compromise which gives the "big clubs" more of what they want while UEFA remain the organisers.

You're deflecting

We'll see what comes next, what is clear is that the law was on Super League's side and that UEFA/FIFA have indeed acted as monopolies

Nothing like a bit of poorly regulated capitalism to have the customer at heart. And yes they are both.
