With the prospect of any one of those three very good sides in the next round, I just don't see how England get through unless we fluke it on pens.

As for Scotland, I'd love to know how many Euros and World Cups they've got to now and failed to get out of their group. They're yet to play a knock out match at any tournament they've qualified for.

I found it somewhat hilarious today that the media was going on about Billy Gilmour as some wonder player, when all he did against England was commit fouls, either tripping opponents or pulling their shirts...

I take it you didn't watch Stuart Armstrong today
I was far more taken with the display Croatia put on over the whole game, rather than a single individual in the Scotland team. I thought Croatia were superb, and not even phased when Scotland equalised. They just carried on in a far superior manner.

They had a lot of the ball but didn't really go anywhere. Modric scored a belter.

Croatia finally showed why they were in the world cup final. They definitely had another gear when it was needed. Scotland played well enough but just didn't have that little bit of quality needed at this level.
Unfortunately it was the dropped points against Czech and England which really cost them, we didn't really expect anything against Croatia

England slipped up badly last night, it's not about wining a game but going as far as you can in the tournament and they shot themselves in the foot big style. A draw rather than a win was required for the far easier route to be secured.

The Croatians finishing second now have an infinitely easier knockout phase match. It was obvious that second in the group was preferable to first and unlike the last World Cup when they got the easier route after finishing second in the group phase, they've in effect chained an anchor to their neck and are sinking fast.

England now face France, Germany or Portugal instead of the far easier runner up from group E, possibly a seriously poor Spain but more likely Slovakia or Sweden.

England reached the World Cup semis thanks to a hugely favourable draw after qualifying second when Belgium reserves beat England's deliberately weakened 'third' team in the last group match, a match both desperately wanted to lose

England rugby messed up by qualifying in first and giving themselves an impossible draw which meant playing the final just a week after beating the mighty all blacks - in effect qualifying first in their group did for them.

Sometimes you have to use your tournament nous and finish in the best position when first is clearly worse, winning a game makes it good the next day, doing well in the tournament is remembered far longer.

You either win it or you don't. no prizes for semis or quarters. If you are going to win it, you have to beat the best teams.

Sometimes it's easier to beat the best team in the final after having the easier route to get there. Beating a lot of good teams on the way makes it far far harder.

It's the equivalent of meeting Wycombe Wanderers in the third round of the FA cup rather than City. You can say you'd play City as you have to beat the best but I'd rather play Wycombe and meet City in the final.

Tbf a cup competition hardly means the best teams progress anyway - it's not a league table were the best will always win.
