2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Slated him plenty since he joined - plenty of the criticism is valid and withstanding but he has played at an improved level recently.

His goal was phenomenal but his overall performance, until they went down to 10 men, was still lacking. At 10 men, he was able to create a bit more room for himself which obviously helps and he looked much more comfortable.

Now, I would still like to see him do a lot more. I’m talking in terms of standing up and being counted each and every week and being able to run a game when needed.

Bernard, Richarlison and to a lesser extent, Walcott, will be able to take that load away from him - hopefully Gomes too, I believe he will - but, he is still the main man in there and has to live up to that bulling.

The goals are good. The performances are getting there. Plaudits go to Marco for finally getting that technically sound player out there.

Finally an honest appraisal. Look if he hits over 15 from midfield and lays on a lid of assists then he can be as anonymous as he wants in impacting how we control the midfield. If Silva is choosing to use him this way then we need two better midfielders behind him. We effectively leave Davies and Gueye against the oppositions three man midfield at times. I even put in the match thread that Siggurdson better get a goal second half to make up for his non performance so far. He is playing a lot better and no one can argue with the output, but if we surrender midfield to better opposition than Leicester we’ll get punished and lose games.

Exactly. This is what I've been getting at.

It is why I want him to do more. Strikers can be anonymous and get the winner and that's fine. That's their job. But midfielders can't be. They have to contribute for the full ninety or certainly a majority of it.

I agree C, in general.

But he wasn't anonymous yesterday. He was involved in every chance we had. How is that 'anonymous' for a player playing at number 10?

I’m not getting at yesterday in particular P, you know that.

Fair enough mate.

Fulham I think is a good example of what you mean, before the pen miss. Same with the West Ham game.

But I think on balance so far this season he's been one of our most consistent performers. Needs to keep it up. The competition for places will help.

His work off the ball is excellent, he is chasing and harrying all over the pitch whilst other teams allow players like Siggy to basically stay free to receive the ball. Under Silva he has bought into the work ethic and this will actually restrict his midfield influence against being a free player or marauder. It is going to be one or the other.

Had a quick look at his stats. Other than him playing much better hard to pinpoint much. Slightly more tackles and interceptions on last season but less passes. He has however had 50% more "key passes", nearly twice as many shot and twice as many crosses.

So far Silva has had him operating him in the final third more, where he has made improvements. Most games his average position is alongside the front man. Almost playing as a 2nd striker. In fairness the 3 stats I mentioned above, shots, key passes and crosses are what you would want from someone doing that and he is delivering on them.

Part of the issue though, is people have wanted him to be a playmaker. It's not him, never been him and never will be him. There is an argument about whether we want to operate with a 2nd striker, but thats very much a Silva issue as opposed to a Gylfi one.

I like the balance of yesterdays midfield. Walcott, Richarlinson, Sigurdsson all work very hard. Davies and Gana cover a lot of ground and Gana breaks a lot up. Bernard is very much the wildcard and playmaker.

Yes, very much so.

I’ll always think we overpaid for him just because there was no one else bidding... but the curler last week and that wonder goal yesterday are the kind of goals you should expect a 45M player to deliver every now and again.

His class and technique have been evident for years , although he hadn’t shown it as much as we liked. That’s not all down to him tho, he doesn’t have pace so he needs to receive the ball in and around the area, in those situations he is dangerous and will provide goals and chances. His work rate can never be questioned as he covered more yards that anyone I. The league a couple of seasons ago and was top of distance covered for us last year. If Walcott scored the sitter at saints etc he could quite easily be on 5 goals and 4-5 assists already.
