2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Sig was M.I.A last year for one reason only. He was bought from Swansea and was expected to perform at the same or better level here, Swansea for all they're faults are a fast ball team, the passing was terrific, He came here at a time when Rooney, Davies, Dcl, Bolassie and a mess of a back four were loosing balls for fun. I knew as soon as you surround him with players who can pass, run into ...and find space he would shine....and shining he is.
Like the big star of the North.
COYSig

Rooney’s inclusion meant he never got to play in his best position, not properly. The longer the season went on the deeper Rooney dropped and Gylfi was stuck on left with arguably the worst Right Back I’ve ever seen wear the blue shirt behind him.

Now we’re starting to see how good he is and with proper attacking players in front of him. If Gomes comes in and offers that link between defence and attack – not to dig at Davies who I thought did well - then we could have something very special. I still think this season will be a modest one in terms of league finish but we’re seeing better football, ideas and tactics pay off and clear progression.

People are actually arguing that Ramsey's little flick was a better goal than Siggys on Saturday...type of deluded world do we live in

I think as a team goal and the build up play Ramsay's goal will always be talked up especially with the clever finish but for pure individual brilliance Sigurdsson's is miles ahead.

Both are contenders for Goal of the month. Reckon Ramsey might just shade the public vote but what a turn and hit from Sigurdsson.

Such people need to learn their lesson and appreciate mitigating circumstances (of which there were absolutely tons last season!) and understand a player takes more than a fortnight to settle.

The same people also need to learn that players dont become bad players overnight.

I think the price tag has obviously been the main hurdle.

The main argument I saw last season was 'he's not doing what a £45m player should do'... but how can we define what a £45m player should do?

Gylfi's job is to create and score chances. He does that and did it last season. He didn't do it enough, but there were several factors in that. Some entirely down to him, and some more to do with the entire team/management.

I pointed out plenty of times over the summer that as soon as he got fully up to speed in terms of fitness last season (from around November onwards) I thought he was consistently a 7/10 up until his injury. He was linking up well with Rooney, who looked half the player when he played deep after Gylfi's injury, whereas beforehand he was playing well in that central role in midfield.

As we've all said, he needs to keep it up, but Silva clearly sees him as a vital part of the team and is looking to build our attack around him.

Slated him plenty since he joined - plenty of the criticism is valid and withstanding but he has played at an improved level recently.

His goal was phenomenal but his overall performance, until they went down to 10 men, was still lacking. At 10 men, he was able to create a bit more room for himself which obviously helps and he looked much more comfortable.

Now, I would still like to see him do a lot more. I’m talking in terms of standing up and being counted each and every week and being able to run a game when needed.

Bernard, Richarlison and to a lesser extent, Walcott, will be able to take that load away from him - hopefully Gomes too, I believe he will - but, he is still the main man in there and has to live up to that bulling.

The goals are good. The performances are getting there. Plaudits go to Marco for finally getting that technically sound player out there.

you do realise you support everton and not man city... what type of performances are you realistically expecting ???

I would have a sit down and have a good re-evaluation. we are the 7th/8th best team, not title contenders

The absolute nonsense in here. Even after another match winning goal.

Whatever lads. If you can't be convinced you're talking truffle now you never will be.

"Midfielders have to be involved the entire game" is quite possibly the weirdest and incorrect thing I've read in ages.

Eriksen.
Alli.
Ozil.
Pogba.
Hazard.
David Silva.
Sane.
Sterling.

All match winners, worth their weight in points yet can for large parts just drift through games, keeping it simple before scoring or assisting in fantastic fashion.

Gylfi has to continue a steady flow of output in relation to goals and assists. 10 goals would be fantastic.

But have to be anymore "involved" than he is for 90mins all game, every game?

Naive. Misjudged. A little bit stupid.

Pick any of the above.

@Connor

Ok, so for the people who are now saying I told you so on Sigurdsson because he has finally started to show what people hoped he would when we signed him, the 3 goals he scored in the last 2 games have seen him equal last seasons output and we're in October. A great feat, not going to argue, but also shows how relatively anonymous and inconsistent he was last season.

Not a person in here actually wants him to fail. They just wanted him to do what he should've been doing anyway, getting involved, giving us an edge, being a difference maker. If he's not the type of player to be involved more in games (as some have suggested) then he has to at least offer these type of moments on a regular basis, or he is the definition of a passenger.

If he keeps this type of form up, no one will have a problem with him. It's simple really.

It's fine to play a striker who isn't prolific if he offers the team something else, like the way Marcus Bent used to. He worked his arse off for the team and chased everything, allowing the team as a whole to capitalise, so his lack of goals wasn't an issue. Conversely, Jelavic and the Yak, who scored for for fun, once Moyes insisted they play more like Bent, not only did the goals dry up, but they didn't offer the same type of outlet, so it didn't work.

If Sigurdsson was dictating games and being more involved like the way a Silva or an Ericsson or even a peak Arteta did for us, no one would care if he wasn't scoring. But seen as that isn't his game, the goals and the assists are crucial.

Long may they continue.

Frank you wanted a fella in charge whose spent a hundred million in the summer and our rag tag band of jarg fellas ripped to bits.

Please step aside.

Although this is a reasonable post, just because someone stylistically plays like Silva or Arteta, doesn’t make them a good player. I think there are a lot of strange attitudes from individuals that this type of player HAS to be in our side. Frankly, that person doesn’t exist in a lot of sides because it doesn’t exist within the tactics. And that’s OKAY. Being able to hold the ball as a playmaker is not always a good thing.

I'm not saying that it automatically makes someone a good player if they are stylistically like Silva or Arteta, but more often than not, a player of that type will be key to the way in which team plays.

My point about Sigurdsson isn't that he should be that type of player, simply that if he's not, and if he's not a deep lying centre mid, or a winger, or a traditional number 10, or a striker, and if he's not scoring or creating as much as he should, then what is it exactly that he is doing?

Which I concede is not so much of an issue when he is doing and producing what he has been recently. It's an observation that a number of people have had, and an opinion that he is validating by showing us what he could've been providing much more frequently in the year he's been here.

And as I said before, long may it continue.
