2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

I just think of the amount of times Walcott and Richarlison went running into space down the flanks when we won the ball, only for Schneiderlin to turn sideways and give it to Baines, letting Wolves recover.

In key away games, Gylfi’s vision could set up chances on the break and maybe - just maybe - we’ll come away from some “big teams” with more than just a medal for trying hard. I realise, however, that scenario relies on Gylfi still possessing that kind of vision that made us shell out for him in the first place. Here’s hoping...

Yeah, which is why I'd like us to set up with him and Bernard playing loads of through balls away from home too.

Maybe not against the top six, but hey, if we want to win, why not?

I know this is the internet where opinions are often harsh and over the top but if we keep on ushing players to the exit door after a few poor games you set a precedent for the replacement, so Bernard comes in and doesn't look great, chuck him in the bin too?

I know we are time limited and can't wait forever but sometimes you need to give players a couple of seasons to settle, (this shouldn't be so much the case with a proven PL player like Siggy - but in his defence he has already had 4 managers in his 12 months here) it's easy to get on a players back, how about take the slightly harder route and support him? We know he can pick a pass and score goals as he has done it for Swansea and Iceland, it's up to Silva to unlock that potential by playing in a way that enables him to perform. If after the end of this season under the same manager and a fairly settled team he continues to offer little then we may actually have some decent evidence to give him a hard time. Doing so after only playing 40 minutes of the first game of the season must be setting some kind of record.

I don't think he's as bad as some here are making, but I would swap him in a heartbeat for that Ruben Neves.

The manager excuse doesn't really wash as that is the same for everyone in the squad.

He should be given a few games but not the season. We can't play players on the hope they will change. If he isn't any better when gomes is fit he should lose his place and have to fight for it back with any game time he then gets.

I’ve banged this drum on a few threads, but I would like to see him drop in alongside Gana when Bernard comes in to play at 10.

It is entirely possible that I just WANT him to do well, but I am doing my best to be objective and think he is a creative enough player to be that link between defence and attack for us. With movement like Walcott and Richarlison gave us today, as well as the sheer pace those two and Bernard can offer, there’s a job to be done finding them more quickly than Gueye/Schneiderlin are able to.

That could very well end up being Gomes’s job but I think Gylfi should be allowed an audition at least.

He has never played that deep in his career and you won to gamble to shoehorn him in. Gomes is already that type of player.

Geez he definitely wasn't as bad as made out on here. The guy only played 40 odd minutes as well.

I was equally as surprised reading the match comments as well. We were away from home, we were winning and we were looking comfortable until the red card. No one at that point had been outstanding but equally no one had stank the place out.

He’ll be starting next week and will play well.

He has certainly played the role for Iceland, and he has to come so deep to get the ball when our CMs are too afraid to play it forward that it may as well be his starting position and then our No. 10 can hold his position!

He puts himself about enough to demonstrate he can hold his own there, and, to be fair, we don’t know enough about Gomes yet to know that he’ll slot straight into that role after issues with his form and fitness the last couple of years.
