2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

People overreacted towards the fee we paid for him and now feel as they're in a "Sigurdsson is crap" team that they can't leave, because it'd mean they were wrong. This leads to constant and overly harsh criticism. Happens constantly on this forum and presumably others.

He has certainly played the role for Iceland, and he has to come so deep to get the ball when our CMs are too afraid to play it forward that it may as well be his starting position and then our No. 10 can hold his position!

He puts himself about enough to demonstrate he can hold his own there, and, to be fair, we don’t know enough about Gomes yet to know that he’ll slot straight into that role after issues with his form and fitness the last couple of years.

I've never seen him play centre mid. I'm not sure what attributes make you think he would be good in the role. He can't tackle, can't dribble, has no pace, lacks vision but he does put himself about.

Seems harsh to be berating him now after he played about 40 minutes. He was subbed off because it made the most sense positionally and given that we were 1-0 up at the time he was the closest thing we had to a luxury out there.

Once we're more settled as a team and the new players are integrated, we should be looking to see him create chances from set pieces especially, but also be able to pick out the runs of players like Richarlison, Walcott and Bernard. It's way too early to be writing him off.

Will be an important member of the squad this season as the new boys will no doubt struggle at times to come to terms with football in England, can't understand why he is getting stick for yesterday. Not like anyone was having a great game before the sending off other than Richarlison.

I didn't want he before we bought him. People fell for statistics that was based on his free kicks to a giant centre forward. He isn't a creative player during play. He was bought on the premise we would be buying a target man but we haven't. Our style of play will be different under Silva than what koeman intended. In the right system he may do well but I just can't see it in how we want to play.

I'd say it is the opposite. People have decided he must be good because he cost £45m. If he were a youth team player he'd be written off already as someone who hides or is anonymous. DCL massively outperformed him from the same position last year yet the consensus seems to be he is not good enough.

I think people decided he must be good because of consistent performances in the PL for Swansea for years. I also think he was a youth player scoring volleys from 45 yards and screamers from outside the box we wouldn't be writing him off. Couldn't disagree more about DCL.

I am yet to see him take a game by the scruff of the neck and say to the crowd “I am going to win this game for us”. I don’t think he has anything more than a 5/10 performance with the odd free kick/outside of the box goal in him. Begging the question, why spend that much money on him?

I was equally as surprised reading the match comments as well. We were away from home, we were winning and we were looking comfortable until the red card. No one at that point had been outstanding but equally no one had stank the place out.

He’ll be starting next week and will play well.

Law of averages say it's got to happen some time.
