Has Phil Jagielka peaked?

mate I try an stay away from bias as much as I can but hes not a top 4 CB IMO.

Really?

He is better than any CB the RS have.

And he is better than DiMichaealis at City

He is at least as good as Mertesacker at Arsenal and both Cahill and Luiz at Chelsea.

In short, there are very few "top four" CBs in the PL better than Jags, IMO.

I agree he is past his peak but that is just a natural thing as he us now into his 30s and his best years were two or three seasons ago.

But I wouldn't criticise him too much for last season as he missed the half of it through injury and wasn't fully match fit in the World Cup.

They have. And they're generally disagreeing with you.

Jagielka has been fantastic for us and there's nothing whatsoever to suggest he isn't good enough to be part of any future success at Everton, and suggesting Martins Indi who has done nothing outside the league that Alfonso Alves was a superstar in is the answer is madness.

He's a senior player in a squad that has had a phenomenal season and this thread is reactionary to him playing on the wrong side of defence for a national team that lacked teamwork and consistency - with the axis of crap that was Gerrard and Henderson in front of him.

I couldn't agree with you more, comparing his quality with the national team is entirely different from his form with Everton. It is an entirely different conversation, last season jags had incredible moments and to be honest I never worried when we needed him to step up because he did exactly what he needed to 9 out of 10 times. He captains our team and adds to the chemistry that we are continously building under Martinez, he may be older and out of his "prime", but far from useless for us. Lastly, whether or not hes a top 5 CB doesn't matter in my book, hes doing exactly what he needs to for us and thats all we can ask.

Theres no value in selling him anymore, I do think its an area we need to look at, particulary with our current style of play, as he's not really commanding enough to be the distin type, and john stones needs to be playing

if we got £5m for him I wouldn't be bothered if he was sold. he suffers more with injuries lately and he made a few costly mistakes last season. I'm not saying I want rid but if the price was right then I wouldnt be bothered if he left. he's been a very good player for us and if he stayed I would have no doubt he's still capable of doing a job.

£5m?! And what would we do with that exactly - it's a pittance for an really high class defender, which Jagielka certainly is. We'd have to replace him you know, and there's absolutely no chance we'd get better for £5m.

due to his age we would not get much more would we? like I said I'm not saying get rid off him, far from it. but if Martinez thought it was wise to sell him and had someone lined up it would not bother me tbh. I think £5m for a player of his age would be decent business because whether we like it or not we are still a sell to buy club.

can we fit another 5mill in the war chest

Jags is not a world class defender but is a very good defender and I would hate to sell him. There not many better in the PL and IMO IS England's best defender currently.

He gets a rough ride for England simply because he plays for us and has come into the setup late in his career. England have been very lucky over the last 10yrs or so having Adams, keown, Campbell, Ferdinand and Terry who in there primes were world class defenders, so Jags is being judged against these!

I think playing regulary in the CL can and does usually bring you on another level. Jags has never had that but I think easily could of played for the teams above us over the last 5 yrs. thankfully for us he stayed here!

Jags is a very unique defender in the sense he is terrible at it.

He is a utility defender converted into a defender and of course has his limitations. However for what he does for us he is fantastic at it. He needs a mobile defender next to him Distin/Lescott/Yobo to really shine. He doesn't cover the ground like they do and instead he plays the last man back routine. He is as good as any defender for reading the danger in that way and making last ditch tackles. That is why the likes of Barry really help out because they do the leg work in front of him allowing him to snuff out the danger inside the box instead. This is why he struggles against defenders making him turn before the box (suarez for example).

I am not saying he is a bad player for that, in fact he is as good as any defender i have seen in what he does for our team. England need a complete defender to play as Gerrard is a terrible holding midfielder and Jags isnt that. However i can see his limitations, but as a team we play to his strengths instead and that is why him and Distin complement each other like a partnership should, they do the things the other cant do.

So no he has not peaked in my eyes, he will still be a fantastic defender for us next season, england can go and find another fall guy to blame when Shaqri rips them to shreds in september. Personally i think Jags will get better over time and with the young Stones to step in, could be a massive influence on him as well.

Think Jags is far too inconsistent to be one of the top CBs in the world. I do think he's peaked but he's still a great defender who does a good job, I'm sure Martinez will find a replacement to pair with Stones in time.
