Heard a rumour about the Manager interview process and rationale behind appointing Benitez

Hmm, i'm not convinced about this 'magic formula'. I accept that it worked when Paisley took over from Shankley (and every half-wit pundit has parroted its effectiveness since) but i'm not sure that the subsequent evidence supports the alleged effectiveness. I don't think that Fagan was there long enough/successful enough to count. There has been numerous coaches who have stepped in as temporary/caretaker managers when a successful manager has moved on to bigger and better things, they don't stay around for long. As for us, we tried it with Harvey who managed to turn a team of league winners into also-ran's within a few seasons.
cant use Harvey as an example of this, something catastrophic happened to English football around that time that I cant quite recall as it never gets mentioned in the media but it meant our leading scorer left for Spain, our right hand side went to Scotland to play football (Scotland FFS!!), and... well I'm sure we all know the rest.

I'd take it with a big pinch of salt personally.

We've already kind of seen that Ferguson's role has been diminished somewhat under Benitez already.
I’d echo this, but equally let’s not pretend the club don’t protect their own; Baxter, Jeffers and Branch all got jobs regardless of their questionable circumstances.

The latter after being a convicted drug dealer, too.

I was told that out of all of the managers that were interviewed for the manager's job, only Rafael agreed to retain Ferguson in the coaching setup?

So I don't know if this is a complete fabrication, or if it is true, I have only heard it 2nd hand so wanted to ask if anyone else knew about this?

I guess my question is that after serving under several different managers if the above is to be believed do you think the board are seriously considering making Duncan the next Everton Manager?

Personally, I think this would be a masterstroke, mirroring a formula that has worked incredibly successfully at clubs likes Liverpool and Barcelona. Creating an Everton Managerial DNA, Ferguson, Baines, Coleman - each with Everton in their blood and who understand what it means to the fans and our community to play for the shirt and allow us the chance to use Brands and his future successor to develop, identify and engage talent without it costing the earth.

What's wrong with creating the Everton way as a philosophy for success?
I seriously doubt the veracity of this. The club is a billion pound business and protecting the clubs value ranks immeasurably higher than ensuring one member of backroom staff(beloved as he is) retains his position. If Everton DNA was the focus then employing Benitez(beloved by rivals) would be far from the plan. His appointment screams steady experienced hand to manage a valuable business, not sentimentality

Really? Where have we seen this?
Of course he brought in some of his own staff (nearly every manager does), but not only was Ferguson retained on the coaching staff he was retained in his current role i.e. 'Assistant Manager'

Everton announced yesterday on the club website that new manager Rafael Benitez had identified some members of his backroom staff. One of his assistant managers will be 49-year-old Toffees legend Duncan Ferguson, remaining in his post from the previous coaching administration of Carlo Ancelotti. The other assistant will be longtime Benitez confidante, 48-year-old Fransisco “Paco” de Miguel Moreno, who has accompanied him across his stints from Liverpool, to Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli, Real Madrid, Newcastle United

Fair enough, but I think the 'jobs for the boys' tag is applicable only with that 80's/90's player crop those that still need to maintain the lifestyle, those that just missed out on the really big salaries - I think today's crop of Everton players, particularly the likes of Baines and Coleman the motivation is not financial - they don't need to work as 99% of them are set for life...

If the club has no DNA, then what's wrong with wanting to try and build one.

"...various managers who have systematically wrecked the squad, by accident or design, since Moyes" If you believe that then why would another manager be different, I agree the club needs a plan but that should never be dedicated by the Manager, that's where we have gone wrong in the past....

As for Hari Kari well, I am happy to have a discussion with anyone, as long as they are open
Sorry, you misunderstand me, I was suggesting that the folk on here are rather intolerant of former players being in key roles, I was not particularly agreeing with that. (Although I would have Ferguson no where near the club).

In a way I was rather agreeing with your contention, that we lack a DNA and that would be one way to achieve it. But more than half the modern squad appear to have no great affiliation with the club, more with a pay packet, so you'd be back to jobs for the boys.

Well he appears to be doing his coaching as usual like, but even anecdotal evidence on Saturday suggested he probably isn't as close to Benitez as we was under Ancelotti. He stayed in his seat for practically the entire match.

Personally I would have given the context of the circumstances. And Benny is known for his ego, not a bad thing when a football manager.

Dunc as an Evertonian must be as disgusted at the appointment as the rest of us.

I, and many others, are at least thankful he is there as a Top Professional with the Club in his heart, and will see us through these dark shameful days.

Maybe he would got off his seat had it been Chelsea city Utd or them over the park. Given it was the Southampton on one of their selling spree seasons. It was an expected result.

Ferguson is nothing in this regime...just as he was nothing under Martinez, Koeman, Allardyce, Silva and Ancelotti.

He's there because every incoming manager has been told he's vital to the spirit of the squad and if he was left out of the first team coaching staff he'd cause ripples of dissent.

He will never ever be manager of Everton FC.
