Holgate Racially Abused By Firmino - The Guardian

Twitter is staggering.

Every time they get on the back foot about anything they bring up hillsborough.

It’s so stunningly disrespectful to the actual victims and their families, I can’t wrap my head around it

I've always defended our fans over it and have personally never seen or heard any reference to it myself at any derby. I've seen wall pushing gestures and saw loads the other night which i've always took to be a reference to Heysel.

But there is a picture on Twitter from @DaveStanno that shows one of our fans with his hand over his face which appears to be a gesture about the Hillsborough crushing. It could be completely unrelated, but doesn't look good to me. Obviously one fan in a following of 8,000, but if it was a Hillsbrough reference then that is absolutely disgusting and i'm gutted we have someone like him in our support.

Have already said I won't be saying anything negative about Firmino until I hear that he's proven to have said anything racist.

However, I don't understand the defence of the use of a word in any language linked to Negro. It's quite clearly deliberately referencing someones race in the confrontation, where race is not relevant to anything they're arguing about? Suarez admitted to using the word Negro to Evra. I don't see the relevance of bringing that up in a confrontation and the same would be the case for this incident if that is what happened. After just being thrown over the advertising hoardings and running over to confront Holgate visibly annoyed, there is no likely reason why he would have used any reference to skin colour other than to be negative.
I completely agree.

Someone’s actually made this, they’re abhorrent

Over 40 years I’ve supported Everton an have always, for the most part, got on with Liverpool fans. This new generation are a different breed!!

‘Scum’ doesn’t describe them adequately. Lost any respect for them over the last few days

Never believe what a kopite says.

There is picture evidence that is on Twitter of the gesture. Don't want to post it on here.

Pictures don't always tell a full story but given that someone right near him is doing a wall pushing gesture, i'm not confident that this lad isn't referencing Hillsborough.

None of this Hillsborough stuff picked up on video again, despite the amount of phones in the crowd.

There’s a photo going round of one cretin pretending to suffocate. It’s not that much of a stretch to imagine a small handful of people doing it. It’s not like mocking tragedies is unheard of in football, their fans have done it, untied fans have done it and so have ours. It’s just important to remember that they are always a tiny minority and never a reflection of a fanbase as a whole. People are dicks regardless of what team they support.

That fan is a prat and it’s disgusting, however the picture is about 10 years old.

Every derby they make these accusations, there must be about 55k cameras at Anfield every year yet there’s only even been 1 fan actually doing what they say.

Not likely - it was reported immediately after it happened, to the ref. The fact that there hasn't been a peep out of the RS, either directly or via their many minions in the Press, would suggest that it happened.

I’m not sure their silence is any indication of guilt, it’s probably the best way to handle it as Everton have done the same and not commented.
