By not selling players today, we've pretty much guaranteed several players go for free next year as well. Kenny, James, Tosun, Delph all come to mind and there might well be others I've forgotten.

Of course it will be good to get them off the payroll, but at some stage we need to bring in some fees. Its an indictment on everyone involved in our recruitment.
You are quite right, but the only one we could have got a fee for was Kenny I think. Tosun is injured Delph is a perms-crock on big wages and Rodriguez is similar.
Sigurdsson also, but we cant sell him.

Richarlison will be sold next summer I think,

I understand but don't buy into the fume. I can appreciate that we'd all expected to see the club bring in more than one player today, a RB and we were all hopeful of Diaz coming but none of that has happened. The expectations of the fans wasn't reached but realistically the fans expectations of most clubs isn't fulfilled on deadline day.
The thing is though it should never have gotten to the point where we were expecting the RB situation to be sorted on deadline day - it's been clear to everyone that this was a position that has needed sorting for at least the past 2-3 years. The fact that it still hasn't been is a complete farce

I gave it a 3. The damage has been done in previous windows. We are offering way too much wages to average players and then been stuck with them.
Brands seems to be very poor at offloading any player. So many average players that are fleecing the club. It has been a recurrent problem the last few years.

I think Richarlison will go too. But we are going to need a big rebuild with all the contracts expiring so will probably need the money from a big sale.

It just feels like we are always rebuilding. Nothing ever falls into place at this club and we are always behind the ball.

It’s the right back situation that makes the window an average one. Leaving us with Coleman and Kenny at right back is a huge risk (can’t believe I’m saying this again, it’s like groundhog day every summer).

Gray, Townsend, Begovic and Rondon are all really useful additions.

Keeping James and the hype around fans seeing him in person could be worth a chunk of points.

Agreeing a fair deal for Kean was decent enough business.

We shifted a huge amount of wages off the books too, but failing to sell useless players like Delph, Kenny etc is a waste of wages and possible fees (even if the fees would’ve been small).

Bringing in Benitez makes more sense than ever now. He’s someone who can get the most out of our squad and will work hard to improve them.

This window was going to come at some point, we needed a window where we avoid adding on to our dire financials.

I’m not that convinced about Marcel at the moment either, we’re lacking clear direction and whether it’s his fault, or that he’s not getting the freedom he needs, it’s pretty obvious we need to re-think our plan here.

I haven't made a single excuse as to why the club didn't sign a RB, It's a massive failure on Brands and the club. Athough I think you've just taken a sentence from my entire post focusing on my positive thoughts around the number of and quality of players we've signed from 1.7m.

I didn't want to take anything away from the players we moved on and signed because of the fume that comes from how today panned out.

Rated the window as a 5. Would have been a 3 if not for the positive impact of Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend.

Aside from Lucas Digne we're glaringly short of both quality and bodies at full-back (assuming Holgate remains in his rightful place at CB). The criminal thing is, if we had of retained Thierry Small, he likely would have seen a fair bit of game time as Lucas Digne's deputy, filling in for cup games and the occasional sub appearance in the PL.

Now we're stuck with Delph as back-up LB. ?

I don't actually mind any of the signings that have come in.

I think Rondon is uninspiring and a 2+1-year deal is mad, but he's probably going to be a much more effective backup than Kean ever was, and we've got Kean off the books now.

Townsend, I feel it's kicking the can down the road but it was no fee, low risk and not huge wages. Works hard, got a decent delivery on him. Gray I was happy with at the time and I just hope he keeps up his form now because he's got loads of talent. Begovic fine as a backup.

I said a 5, because of the players we missed out on (well, the positions we didn't fill) and because of the complete lack of a discernible plan, strategy and structure in the recruitment.

I don't think any of the players that came in bar maybe Begovic would have been here if not for Benitez. Rondon and Townsend are clearly his requests, and he has made it pretty clear he had been following Gray for a long time.

We have been left short at right-back and have now left ourselves short at left-back. We wanted a central midfielder and didn't get one. We identified a player who covers all those positions in Maitland-Niles, yet waited until the final Sunday of the window to make an approach to a 'rival' club who are difficult to deal with.

I do not know what Marcel Brands offers. And I know that he's very, very poor at a major part of his job which is moving unwanted players on. Yes, other clubs have this issue, but those other clubs haven't always had the issue. We have now, for three years. We are in a worse financial position now than when Brands took charge, and that isn't just on COVID.

We clearly wanted another winger and haven't got one, though that was always all on James going. So now it's about using what we have, which isn't an awful squad if coached right, but is very reliant on our players not getting injured (lol as if)

Good window, good additions considering the small budget we obviously had.
It's a shame we didnt punt more but the squad isnt big enough for a cull.
Main thing is we didnt get a 20m plus dud players, good window, Moshiri is learning.

I think this transfer window was always handicapped by FFP, Benitez and the clubs hands were tied to a great extent by it, hopefully in January the club will be able to strengthen the squad and we will see some real spending begin, sensible and pragmatic spending not the careless waste of money of the last few years!!

I reassessed and dropped my mark on principle.
But not too far. 5
1) Its actually good that we can't throw silly monry at people to change their minds....boring - but good. Lets face it that policy has not been a roaring success has it, priced us firmly out of the sell on / get rid market
2) There has to be a willing seller for us to buy...like Porto - see above
3) There was no Madrid - PGS domino effect...nothing we could do about that.

I'm more of an 'old school cushion thrower' than a boo-er.
So, my seat isnt that soft and I'm not angry enough as lets face it, Gray and Townsend haven't been that bad have they...to get rid of my cushion this time around*
* saving it for the next totally gutless inept performance that comes along - like buses there's always one sooner or later.
