I'd actually say be underrated...due to the fact that he was overrated so much as a youngster. His scoring record is awesome...people just concentrate on him not becoming the best player in the world.

Could he have utilised his talents more? Possibly yes...he has still had a better career than most others.

He has a very good career but that's not the point I'm trying to make. We should be talking about one of the greats of the game and for me personally, he hasn't done that.
He has had patches of brilliance where you think he's finally got himself together, but it just doesn't happen for long enough. He also has been a nearly certain pick for a team that has won a lot of titles for a number of years. He was bound to pick up quite a lot of goals.
 
He had no need to be the 'Rooney at Everton', they had Ronaldo.

Keep the ball and give it to Ronaldo.

This for about 5 years is bound to have a negative affect on his game.

Was he not more than 20 years ago? If we go back that far I would plump for Lineker. But it is all relative to what era they were playing in. Does not change my view on Rooney though. He had the fantastic potential but what happened to it. In essence when he was with us I see his flair and style mirrored in Barkley. Hope to goodness we keep Barkley going the right way.

no you can't go back that far, Gazza was still playing the last 20 years (Euro 96 he was good) so I just thought you might have said him

but if not Rooney, then who ?

remember the trainer used to work at Everton called Willie Donachie ? I always thought if he married phil babb then they would be Donachie Babb, probably wouldn't happen though

I see were you're coming from, can't say I totally agree as he was integral to those title winning teams. Many good players haven't cut it in quality sides. I mainly think he's underrated as basically...not many people seen to rate him. Even the media questions his ability.

Ah well.. I'll leave it at that.

I'm not saying he didn't have any influence other these sides as he was clearly still a very good player. But scoring opportunities maybe presented themselves a little easier than at other clubs. He's not had to work as hard to score a lot up until recently when he's been surrounded by a rank average United side.
