Yawn. The Everton supporter will always say that Barry is the better player and the Man Utd supporter will always say that Carrick is the better player.

Such a boring debate too.

Anyway, how Stupid Are Man U? Let's discuss.
Stay out of this James. You continue the final phases of climbing out of your hole :D

At the time the thread was created, it was quite funny. Looks less so now, but it has morphed into the general Utd thread now.

This is a fair point. Both players are underrated by fans from other teams. They're both the sort of player that you only really appreciate when you see them week in, week out, especially ( with apologies to those who can't get to the games ) if you see them in the flesh rather than on the telly.

Ask almost any Citeh fan about Barry and they'll tell you how good he is. West Ham fans are probably the same about Carrick ( I'm not sure how Spuds fans remember him ).

Carrick is a player who is best played from the deep, LVG is doing that, tactically he is better than Fergie, and he will make better use of Carrick than Fergie ever did. Fergie always struggled against better tacticians, be it Del Bosque, or Guardiola, last season we had a worse version of Fergie in Moyes, another dinosaur tactician, no wonder Carrick struggled against Bayern.
I agree with most of that but you seem to be excusing all of Carrick's poor performances because of the manager's tactics whilst blaming Barry's, particularly the England one, on the player alone. Barry past few games have not been his best but last season in particular he was much better than your description of "All Barry does is protecting the back, he makes zero contribution going forward" and he has career stats on goals/assists to prove it as well.

But fair enough, you don't rate him - it a hard position to judge for any opposition fan as unless you regularly watch the games you only tend to notice them when they screw it up. As @Jim Lahey says their best days are probably behind them both unfortunately, we'll just have to compare how Besic and Blind adapt to the league!

Barry would get into the United team with ease (he's better than Fellaini IMO). Carrick would probably get into Everton's midfield. Both excellent players in their day.

Carrick is a fantastic player but can slow play down, depending on how you want to set out your stall. He's very intelligent and is a superb passer of the ball.

Barry is neat & tidy but doesn't have Carrick's vision in my opinion.

Both players better days are far behind them though.
I think it's unfortunate the debate has turned into a Carrick V Barry debate.

I think Carrick is an underated midfielder. He has excellent vision. Barry is also underated and in honesty is one of those players you only really notice when he plays for your own side. He positions himself very well.

Carrick suits Manchester United's side more. He gets the ball to the array of world class players you have. Barry suits Everton's team more who gets his foot in better and helps give us a more stable defensive shape.

That was all my point was regarding Blind too. He has been an excellent signing for United. He gave you consistency at a time in the season when you were a tad inconsistent. I also think he's an excellent foil for Fellaini. (When Fellaini was at Everton we never partnered him with the correct CM so didn't really get the best from him). I'd have loved Blind to have partnered Fellaini when we had him.

However given Martinez's style of play, high overlapping fullbacks, centre backs who (attempt) to bring the ball out wingers etc he requires his two central midfield players to be combative and also have a lot of mobility to help cover gaps left by the defenders who have pushed on. He also requires them to take hold of the ball in pressured situations and be able to either shield it or dribble with the ball before a pass is on.
While there's no doubt Blind can do this, it isn't what he is most effective at. Therefore he wouldn't get into our team.

It's funny you say that. I think Fellaini has played very well for United this season and gives you a physical presence you were lacking before. What have United fans made of him this season?
