So it's ok that defenders can be beaten by one long ball and a touch in the 89th minute, but the goalkeeper can't make a mistake? Everyone on the pitch can make a mistake, but the goalkeeper is held to a higher standard?

I know you hate the guy (and I never use that word) but that's absolute crap, no matter which keeper we're talking about.

Isnt that what his job is, your comments amaze me Howard's a great keeper when he doesn't make mistakes really?

Howard would be a great keeper if defenders after running for 90 mins and getting battered for 45 of those mins didn't need him to make bread and butter saves?

Yes keepers are held to a different standard, they have a core skill, it's a specialism, heaven forbid a goalkeeper is judged on his ability or lack there of the base skill and decision making in letting in soft goals over a period of games and even seasons on the trot! It works both ways as well you can coast behind a decent defence!

As for hating Howard, why would I? I don't rate him and he's not good enough for us, but I actually pity him more then anything. It frustrates me how he lets his team down time and again, not intentionally but just down to being not up to the standard!

I can understand how US fans like yourself see him, being ace against the likes of Canada and really want to back him in the PL, but we're talking a different standard and different consistency in the PL that the lad just isnt up to!

America have had some great keepers, Howard just isn't one of them, I'd happily swap him for Friedal in the morning!

Not last night he didn't! X

Somehow Krul managed to keep 15 clean sheets, in comparison to Howard's 12 despite Everton having the third best defense record in the league behind City & Utd. (despite our mistake prone defense).

But conceding less goals and saving a higher percentage of shots is better than keeping clean sheets.

His stats were better than Kruls last season, simple as that. People, myself included have rightfully criticised him for last night, but if he was as bad as you always claim he is he wouldn't have the stats he does.

God knows why you can't see it and are way too harsh on him i don't know. Opinions are fine as long as they can be backed up by quantitive data when it comes to footballers.

Hey everybody, Tim Howard saved a higher percentage of shots last season than Tim Krul. And conceded less goals.

krul had a lot more harder saves to make. howard had a combination of jags, distin and player of the year heitinga in front of him as well as the best LB in the league and hibbert had his best season in blue at RB.

Krul had a combination of people i've never heard of like williamson, james perch, the fact that an accident waiting to happen called collicini stood out head and shoulders above the rest speaks volumes

Thats an opinion though really isn't it even on what stats indicate. For example I remember Newcastle having awfull injuries in defense and getting smashed by Spurs by six goals last season, not really indictitive of an entire season is it! 15 clean sheets is a great return and a marker of consistency of an entire season and impact on your teams results. Howard was playing in a defense far superior to Krul ( who was making his debut season in PL), as I said it was second only to the top two.

The fact that Newcastle finished ahead of us are in Europe, just gives a sense of how intangible to reality stats like that are.

I wonder are your stats ratios, for example there is a massive difference in saving 25 out of 50 Shots, in comparison to saving 50 out of 100 shots, still a 50% ratio for either!

Also depends what constitutes a save, is a penalty save counted the same as collecting a weak miskick!

Stats rarely give a holistic or realistic picture!

Tbh anyone who actually watches football and would argue Howard was a better keeper then Krul last season really should be pitied!

Howard is a thoroughly average keeper. He gets beaten all too easily from long range efforts. The one against Villa was terrible, the first one last night was just criminal, it wasn't even a very good shot. Then hopping in the air for god knows why is unforgivable. Sadly, I don't think its an area we'll strengthen any time soon.

Agreed. If the shots the keepers faced in the sample were both the same, it would be a better indicator. Too many variables on the shots each of them faced and there's no way to quantify how hard each of them was made to work. As is, I prefer my eyes.
