Spent almost two tears applying. Degree educated and other qualifications. In mid fifties and was on the cusp of giving up but got a job two months ago. As I said earlier in this thread, pay is not great but it's a job. Just persist and don't take it personally as the people who decide are sometimes as clueless as the rest of us. It's a lottery most of the time.

Well in mate, just shows you should never give up.

It's dead easy once you hit middle age to think no-ones interested, but sometimes you just need to get a foot in the door to show what you can do.

Yeah, sorry mate. Keep ya chin up!

Just been reading a thing about London Underground Station Assistants.

30k & they get 10 weeks paid leave per year.

Proper made me do a Clay Davis "Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit" when I read that.

so you'd imagine that 30k would go up a fair bit as well cos there'd be plenty of other folks holidays to cover on overtime.

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find work, one obstacle is that all my certificates and apprenticeship indentures got lost when moving back from New Zealand (the only time they'd been out of my parents house as well ffs). I started my Apprenticeship with Royal Ordnance (M.O.D) but they were bought by British Aerospace so I was employed by them when I came out of my time. Despite getting both M.O.D. and BAE to search their databases for records of my employment they both have absolutely no trace of me whatsoever. Increasingly Jobs are being advertised and stating that will require to see The papers that are lost to prove that I am a fully qualified person that served an indentured apprenticeship, possibly due to folks doing 6 month training courses that the job centre sent them on. They are the Jobs that are worth having as well.

To cap it all, now I am wanting to apply for a job with BAE which is a job that I would really like, enjoy & be committed to (not always been the case tbh) with a good level of Job Security & Satisfaction as well as a great wage for day shift (more than the majority that are continental shifts tbh) I have all of the qualifications they want but have no proof of them, they only hold data for 10 years so as I finished in 89 I am long gone from their system & where I worked has also long since gone.

My only hope now is if I show up in the Database for The Official Secrets Act that should have my employment details on it.... you'd imagine that never gets erased.
Another hope is that maybe the NZ Immigration Service have copies on their system which I'd had to send them when I applied to Emigrate.

Sometimes life just keeps on kicking you in the balls.

This job searching is doing my nut....

Engineering - Been out of it too long really (15 years), machinist jobs the machines have different control systems to then & as most include programming I no longer have the relevant experience. Any fitter/maintenance type work requires you to have qualifications in both mechanical & electrical.

Rail (which is what I was trying to get into) - any applications have fallen flat at the 1st hurdle and havent got further than that with any of them across a wide range of roles, I've spoken to HR depts after sitting online test and they al;ways tell me that I've passed and got a high score BUT they get a massive amount of applicants for every vacancy, so basically there must be an amount that either scores higher or also has relevant experience that then get selected for interview. Also with the rail jobs it seems to have all slowed right down & that appears to be because of the way it works with the awarding of franchise e.g. Northern... there's was awarded for 2 years and is up in about April next year, they had to put a bid in by about April this year but they only find out in Feb if they have it again, so over the life of the contract they spend 50% of it not knowing if it'll be renewed & any recruitment slows right down in that time... certainly any for any trainee roles.

Others - searching for basically ANYTHING you either have to have experience in doing the exact same thing or its on minimum wage working weekends & shifts with no kind of shift pay & often zero hours, a lot seem to be only 16 hours.

So to say I'm brassed off is an understatement to say the least & the longer it goes on the less suitable you start to feel yourself for jobs you see advertised.

Options -

keep plodding on self employed as better than going on dole, but tbh I've had to cut right back on advertising as it wasn't paying it's way and the amount of calls coming in is getting less and less, plus I've had to renew ads as well cos the phone books do it months in advance meaning if I take a min wage job then I'm still liable for all of that expense.

Reapply to the crisp factory soon as they only reinterview someone after 6 months, the lady in their HR seemed to think I was suitable for the position but it was down to the manager that interviewed me who came to the decision that I was unsuitable as had worked mostly alone so didn't have the answers he wanted. I'm hoping I can get some pointers from her regarding the interview as last time was my 1st interview for about 17 years and nothing like any I'd had before, I cant remember all of the questions tbh (2 interviews 1/2 hour each) & if she feels I'm suitable then maybe she'll give me some examples. Decent wage but a horrendous shift pattern tbh

Sofaworks have a depot around the corner (walking distance) & have a lot of unskilled jobs & customer service, the pay aint too good (almost 1/2 of the crisp place) but never underestimate the value of not having to travel & the expense of it, if you're spending 30-40 notes on that then that's 2k a year for which you need to earn 2.5k upwards & that's not considering the wear & tear on the vehicle & other expenses.

At times like this I really question why on earth I ever left New Zealand & a decent well paid job.

Monthly moan over for me, but the longer it goes on the more I get it in the neck from her indoors.

In my almost constant job searching I just saw a job advertised for an Engineer at Marriott Worsley Park which if you don't know it is a rather plush resort just along the East Lancs Rd from me & just off M62.

The job was for a multi-skilled engineer to carry out various maintenance tasks around the Hotel, Resort & Golf Course. I contacted their HR Dept to enquire and obtain some more details.

Work Hours =40 per week - Cover is 24/7 (what I expected tbh) so days/nights/weekends have to be worked incl also being on call at times in case anything major happens that requires more people to attend to than are on duty.

Then we got to the bit that we all want to know but is often omitted i.e. PAY

I was told that the Salary is £15,000, nothing on top of that with regard to any kind of shift pay whatsoever despite having to work days, nights, weekends. No overtime payments so when on call if you have to go in & do extra hours you don't get anything extra.
(min wage, 40 hours a week is about £10 per week behind that)

Now I don't think any person on here no matter what their political persuasion is can tell me that the wage on offer there is fair & just. A qualified position being paid basically minimum wage for having to be in there at any hour of the day ? & we're talking 1 of the worlds biggest leisure corporations here, I am both disgusted & gobsmacked by the fact that they are paying and allowed to pay a wage that is so low.

The other reality as well is that some poor sod that's signing on is going to be FORCED to take that job whilst the Marriott group get away with making vast profits & having wages subsidised by the UK tax payers in the form of Tax Credits & the likes of Ian Duncan Smith,Hunt, Osborne,Cameron & some of the press vilify the poor bugger that's doing the job and in receipt of the tax credits.

I refuse to believe that anyone on here can say that the wage on offer there is anything short of a disgrace & if anyone at all claims it's better than being unemployed then they should be banned on humanitarian grounds & forced to take that job.

That surely HAS to be a mistake.......... I'd generally expect somebody for that role to be 'at least' double that.
