Looking for a job is absolutely soul destroying at the moment.

This zero hours contracts thing is something that needs to be gotten rid of for a start.
Are you still in work and looking or are you out of work at the minute mate?

If it's the latter, then there's the Enterprise Allowance Scheme if you fancied taking the plunge on your own, might be work a look fella.

I'm self employed but it's failing in a big way so looking for full time permanent employment in something where my previous skills are transferable, and looking for something for the long term as opposed to the short.

Got applications in with the railways and a couple of others in manufacturing. I've just applied for 1 which after speaking to their HR dept looks quite hopeful, working on 'Paint Robots' which isnt something I've done before but I'm hoping my qualifications and experience they will look at as being of some relevance as the position involves some training for the job, hopefully they will look at me as having some 'nouse' and see me as a candidate that may not need a massive amount of training.

Have you registered with any specialist employment agencies and uploaded your CV onto the various job sites?

These days we don't even advert positions anymore, we just go to agencies, who have a portfolio of applicants already in place or trawl the jobsites pro-actively if they haven't. I reckon we're not alone either, as job advertising is costly and time consuming.

Good luck mate.

In my almost constant job searching I just saw a job advertised for an Engineer at Marriott Worsley Park which if you don't know it is a rather plush resort just along the East Lancs Rd from me & just off M62.

The job was for a multi-skilled engineer to carry out various maintenance tasks around the Hotel, Resort & Golf Course. I contacted their HR Dept to enquire and obtain some more details.

Work Hours =40 per week - Cover is 24/7 (what I expected tbh) so days/nights/weekends have to be worked incl also being on call at times in case anything major happens that requires more people to attend to than are on duty.

Then we got to the bit that we all want to know but is often omitted i.e. PAY

I was told that the Salary is £15,000, nothing on top of that with regard to any kind of shift pay whatsoever despite having to work days, nights, weekends. No overtime payments so when on call if you have to go in & do extra hours you don't get anything extra.
(min wage, 40 hours a week is about £10 per week behind that)

Now I don't think any person on here no matter what their political persuasion is can tell me that the wage on offer there is fair & just. A qualified position being paid basically minimum wage for having to be in there at any hour of the day ? & we're talking 1 of the worlds biggest leisure corporations here, I am both disgusted & gobsmacked by the fact that they are paying and allowed to pay a wage that is so low.

The other reality as well is that some poor sod that's signing on is going to be FORCED to take that job whilst the Marriott group get away with making vast profits & having wages subsidised by the UK tax payers in the form of Tax Credits & the likes of Ian Duncan Smith,Hunt, Osborne,Cameron & some of the press vilify the poor bugger that's doing the job and in receipt of the tax credits.

I refuse to believe that anyone on here can say that the wage on offer there is anything short of a disgrace & if anyone at all claims it's better than being unemployed then they should be banned on humanitarian grounds & forced to take that job.

It's a horrible situation with regards to wages etc at the moment.

The only slight positive is getting the job gives you a better chance of getting a better one with better pay and repeating the process over 3/4 years. Not right but that's the way the world is. I've had no choice but to do exactly the same.

Business I had went under and I was working shifts for minimum wage. Took me the best part of 3 years to get back to a wage I consider respectable.

Just had my first couple of professional interviews, since the only other one I had when I left university.

Haven't heard back from the first but it was very useful for my second a week later. I was much more relaxed and didn't need to prep much or think hard about my examples, felt a lot more natural.

I found out a day later that I was successful and will be starting soon in my first Grade 7 (senior manager) role in the Civil Service.

Nice salary uplift ;) but a much more difficult, intense and high profile job.

Good luck reidy la.

I have, or had been, looking for a change after 30 years in pensions and stuff. Applied for a few full time office based stuff, local companies, but after being told that "we are looking for someone with pensions experience", (there are probably about 50 people, nationwide, on the market with my qualies/experience), made me realise that 50 year olds aint that attractive.

Started as a courier this week. Hard graft, but once you get the hang of it, a pretty enjoyable way to get circa £400-£500 pw. Everyones situation is different, but I also have a modest income from my pension days, Mrs R pulls a few bob in, so all in all, it seems to be working out.

Stiff as a board tonight though!

Sounds ace, wish I could do something other than what I'm doing.

my mate recently had an interview for project management that had some proper psychological evaluation going on:

he was sat in a test room tasked to draw up a certain project plan per presentation under a strict time limit. All the while someone sat opposite him taking notes.

Unbeknownst to him at the time, the core 'test' was how the candidate acted under pressure, not how great the presentation turned out to be (tho' that had to still be usable).

Sounds like tough times in UK.

Theres people out in Singapore and Manila i know turning down a large amount of jobs at the moment in all sorts of industries.
