I like him a lot and think he could be really good one day but we could easily replace his performances from last season

I do think he’s got it in him to kick on a lot this season so fingers crossed he does and THEN we can offer him a contract extension

Think at times garner gets way too much criticism, labeled just a work horse, needs to pass forward more etc as that's his strength, needs to impose himself more in games etc.

Ignoring for most of the season his partner was Onana who most said strolled through games - whose picking up that slack, forward passing - to who exactly the lightning runs if Harrison and McNeil? Impose himself -! I'd say watch some of our best results last year- see who from early on was literally leading the press and tempo.

Does he need to be more consistent - yes, on a bad game for him though he still provides the workrate, attitude and effort and doesn't make absolute suicidal decisions like a lot of the others do.

And he's still only 22

Mate I'm not saying give him 100k PW, I'm just saying tie him down to a long term contract because he has already shown clearly he's a solid to good player.

It's hardly a case of Holgate or Keane and giving a contract to a player who'd underwhelmed. Or a Davies who'd looked [Poor language removed] besides a few games, Garner pretty much was the ever present in the midfield last year and held the team together at times
A 2 year extension would be sufficient imo.

Maybe by playing the most minutes of any outfield player last season he kinda proved that don't you think?

But fine let him enter the last year of his deal, when our other cm options consist of a 34 year old Gueye in his last year, a 31 year old Doucoure entering his last year and a 20yo lad from villa whose never kicked a ball for us and seldom for villa either

Both Tarkowski and Branthwaite played more minutes.

I also don't think those are the only 4 midfielders in the world...

He had a middling season, he needs to improve before he gets a 5 year deal, which is what I was responding to.

A five year deal means we have him till 27 over his current one of 24, sorry mate no downside even if he stagnates at what he is now a boost of 20k per week is still value for money - he's currently on depending on the source 25-35k btw

For reference Gueye is in roughly 80k, Onana was on 90-100k, Gomes was on something like 120k

There's definitely downside, look at Everton the past 8 years.

Yup and tying down players who've shown they are more than capable isn't it mate. Garner had two very very solid tests at palace and two solid years here. He's not a Holgate.

I like him. Does a bit of everything. Think he’ll really grow this season.

Nyz, for me yes he does but his best attribute has been neutered by the team he's in, he has great progressive passing, problem is with us who the hell can he progress it too. With the new additions hopefully we will see now.
