I think playing Cleverly centrally made him look worse than he has recently. The poor lad was running all over both sides of the pitch.

I'd send all his Wigan buddies with the Manager should he be shown the door. None have, or will, take Everton forward. What a debut season - I had massive hopes. He looked a winner. A future Everton captain - since then, he has looked everything like the player I feared he could be. On the ball? He's very limited in possession and offers nothing going forward. Off the ball? Doesn't win the ball as much as he should, doesn't block the ball as well as he could. He runs a fair bit but overall? We miss Gareth Barry more than him. As far as I'm concerned, currently, he has under-performed for the majority of his Everton career. If Martinez goes out the door, this lad, his darling, should be quickly behind him.

You sound rather certain about that, could be any number of things. Could just as likely be that Cleverly doesn't think enough about/get as involved in the defensive side of the game like McCarthy does and they had an understanding about it before the match. That is indicative of poor planning, tactics and management.
He could be a good, solid defensive mid though, but having two in the team kind of negates the point of one of them (him) being overly defensive, as he is. I'd wager that if he had two creative players in front of him to whom he has to lay the ball of he'd look much better... Instead he has GarBar, who is (relatively) immobile and old, and does essentially the same job. What a debut season - I had massive hopes. He looked a winner. NO, I was coming on to what you said about Cleverley in a central role and having run every where. That is what my comment referred to. IF Cleverley is not suited to be there then RM is messing up.
I don't think he had a lot of options there. Cleverly, for all intents and purposes, is meant to be a central midfielder. What he isn't though is a Barry replacement. I wouldn't expect Martinez to put him in and expect him to do Barry's job. I don't think McCarthy did either and that is why he had to do so much running.
There's an argument for whether he should have picked Besic instead to partner McCarthy.
I don't want to really get into a Martinez conversation, or at least not in this thread.
Horse crap. We're at a crossroads with McCarthy. Despite his limitations with the ball he's absolutely essential to the way we play, but in general he's stunk the place out since he started picking up those hamstring injuries 18 months ago.
I can count on one hand the good performances he's put in this season and it's not good enough quite frankly. I find it embarrassing despite him playing way over 300 professional games he seems to need Barry next to him otherwise he's completely lost.
His aggression and tenacity are vital, if he's not showing that we need to find someone else who will.
For some reason, he seems unnaturally good at half volleying the ball. Full volleys? Useless. On the deck? Worse. Half volleys? Creams them every time.He could be a good, solid defensive mid though, but having two in the team kind of negates the point of one of them (him) being overly defensive, as he is. Going forward though, think I've seen him attempt about 20 shots in 3 years, 19 of them didn't even look remotely dangerous or even good in any way Comical for a professional at this level, to say the least.
