James McCarthy

not to sound like Jerry seinfeld but what is the deal with Mccarthy and occasionally Gibson being incapacitated for extensive long stretches of time to only become miraculously fit for international duty for the player to eventually being ruled out of contention after they return. Smells sketchy like a con and possibly booze but that's probably just cause Gibson's involved
McCarthy is more or less physically fit, but not match fit, this was the case with Coleman as well last month.

It worked well with Coleman as it got him plent of football in a short time and it did not end in a recurrence of his injury...and that was the risk as it is with McCarthy.

McCarthy isn't suddenly a bad player.

If Koeman can get the best from him he is one of the first names on the teamsheet. A centre mid pairing of him and Gana when Barry eventually leaves is potentially really good.

I hope he plays tonight

the problem with that is neither has the ability to 'control' a game from deep - even if it's just playing a pass that kick-starts an attack.

It's what we miss when Barry isn't on top form. You can have energy all you want but without an element of control then it's just like headless chickens running about.

Barkley could become that player, and Besic does a similar job for Bosnia but he's injured. Barkley however is better at being dynamic and running at players and IMO gets too bogged down with trying to be the playmaker at times.

It's why I think somebody like Schneiderlin could be superb for us. Koeman got the best out of him and he can play either the box to box or sitting role, and has that passing range that Gueye/McCarthy lack. And it looks like he'll very much be available come January.

Its hard to judge any of our player from what happened last year. He's still good, probably. There is just no role for him right now.

i was thinking about coleman too , does that occur with any other Everton player and their international squad? Maybe they're all intimidated by Roy Keane and don't want to get smashed in the face by that deranged rageaholic.
Ireland are that weak at the minute that they need to insist on calling up all their key players. McCarthy is a very very important player for his country and his desire to play along with Keane's demand for total commitment means that he was always going to be called up and will play.

And for future reference, there is no shame in being intimidated by Mr Keane........

Intimidated by Mr Keane?

He's a little fart mate who acts angry as some sort of trade mark

After those last two insipid performances? He'd walk in. And I'm sure Koeman wouldn't fail to have done so as a kick up the arse for those failing.

Well, there's really only Barkley who McCarthy would 'naturally' replace in the centre.

Unless he got played at left back instead of Bry
