James McCarthy

Failed his final audition yesterday for koeman woeful

People have been saying this all season and McCarthy has played in about 5 of the 7 games he's been available. We need a squad to be able to compete over the whole season and as we saw at the start, McCarthy can also play at right back if needed.

The obvious starters are Barry and Gana. But they will get injuries and suspensions over the season, and Gana is going to the AFCON in January so Cleverley and McCarthy will likely to be getting more minutes then.

He wasn't woeful either. He actually does the things he's supposed to do which can't be said for a lot of our other players yesterday. Deulofeu and Bolasie were wingers who couldn't cross or shoot. Barkley barely did anything and Mirallas played a few balls out of play and slide in to his usual pointless challenge to make the crowd think he was actually trying.

This makes no sense.
Barry works his arse off

McCarthy didn't yesterday he was anonymous . but he was supposed to be filling in for a player who works his arse off and isn't shy in asking for the ball .

So for McCarthy to offer NOTHING yesterday was like playing with ten men .

So bizarre how much he has declined. Not as if he is old either.

I have little sympathy for him, though. He held us to ransom for a new contract after one good season because Spurs were interested.

This makes no sense.
I think one needs to question the manager's decision to play him. The only football he has played since August has been two Ireland games, which most acknowledge was a mistake by MON. He wouldn't have been anywhere near match fit yesterday.

IMO we should have started with Davies. If he doesn't trust him at home against the bottom club then when can he?

Made 1/2 tackle, made 0 interceptions, made 1 clearance, 0 blocks, 75% passing - so in total 2 defensive actions
Gueye 7/9 tackles, 3 Interceptions, 4 clearances, 2 blocks, 80% passing so in total 16 defensive actions

Bolasie actually had 4 btw (described as useless defensively by a fair few here, Lennon described as hard working etc - had zero)

Yeah they are only stats etc, but christ it shows the huge gap in quality of the two, espeecially when Gueye gets forward and passes forward a hell of a lot more than McCarthy too.

I'd prefer to see Davies in there as well. I'm not a fan of us playing 2 DM's though especially against sides we're better than.

I don't think anyone is suggesting he's as good as Gueye.

They're different players and I have said already that i'd rather have Gana in than McCarthy as I think Gana is the better player, or at least is proving to be at this moment in time.

But there becomes a popular view on the forums where it's the done thing to slate certain players and McCarthy is one of them.

There was even a piece of action shown on MOTD where McCarthy had a pass out wide blocked which then came back to him and he played a positive longer ball out to the left wing, yet on here he apparently never does anything other than passes 10 yards sideways or backwards and is never looking to do anything more than that. If MOTD can pick up on that in the limited time they show of us, it's obvious that he does more than people on here give him credit for.

Mate the point is he has an image as this hard working defensive mid who covers a lot of ground, which is used to counter the fact he provides nothing going forward, in reality the stats show he actually doesn't get involved much defensively either, he's a defensive midfield version of Cleverley, runs a lot - doesn't do anything

Mate Jagielka scored a 30 yard screamer at the pit, is it something he does often - no, the benchmark is what you see them do regularly and McCarthy - you actually sit up and notice whenever he gets forward or does anything with positive intent.

Gueye is a mile better than McCarthy btw, as is Barry, McCarthy is effectively a engine on legs, and even that seems to have gone backwards the poast few seasons with various knocks

...I think those stats are worthy of highlighting. I keep saying RK wants more from his defensive midfielders. Under RM they sat deep and rarely crossed the half-way line but Koeman wants greater dimension in their play. He wants all players to contribute widely and earn their money. I'm sure the coaches are looking at those statistics with interest.

He is the epitome of Everton, looks like he can play, has played in the past but doesn't play anymore.

Absolutely, there's tons of our squad currently falling into that bracket.

James has been largely rubbish since Martinez's first season, and I think the fanbase on the whole are finally getting fed up of waiting for the player they once were to reappear. Now we have the money we don't have to wait either thankfully.
