James McCarthy

...I think those stats are worthy of highlighting. I keep saying RK wants more from his defensive midfielders. Under RM they sat deep and rarely crossed the half-way line but Koeman wants greater dimension in their play. He wants all players to contribute widely and earn their money. I'm sure the coaches are looking at those statistics with interest.

Walsh is supposedly a huge fan/user of analytics mate, likely why he had Gueye at the top of his list and made it the first signing soon after he arrived, notable thing for me is that Gueye actually seems to be one of the few players we have that udnerstands how to press in games as well, which when the rest of the team doesn't seem to have a clue means often he is having to almost do it alone - and thats 100 times harder to do effectively, genuinely think he is the player we should look to build this team around, he's a lynchpin and one of the few who seems to show he is up for the game no matter what is happening around him

Absolutely, there's tons of our squad currently falling into that bracket.

James has been largely rubbish since Martinez's first season, and I think the fanbase on the whole are finally getting fed up of waiting for the player they once were to reappear. Now we have the money we don't have to wait either thankfully.

First season he played like he had a point to prove then got comfortable and his intensity dropped - soon as that happened we got to see how limited he is when he's not playing at 110% every week

Other interesting stats, Jags 0/1 tackels, 0 interceptions, 0 blocks, 4 clearances, so 4 defensive actions
williams 1/3 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 block, 5 clearances, so 9 defensive actions

Coleman had 3, Baines 7 just to complete the back 4

....I'm sure such things are also a key factor in identifying targets. I notice this is included in the scope of the new 'co-ordinator' appointed to Wash's scouting network.

I think you have outlined the problems Koeman has with this current set of players. Koeman, apparently has a style of play that requires players to press and we don't have the players to do that. He also wants a big target man who can score from a cross and hold the ball up, again we don't have that.
The dilemma is do you go with the manager or find a pattern of play that suits the current squad. Personally I feel our current squad have given up any entitlement to dictate the terms of how the club should progress. I wouldn't have confidence in the current lot delivering. Time has come for an overhaul. We do have some players who deserve to be at Everton, problem is we have far too many who don't.
We will continue to limp to January and prey not too much damage is done and buy 3/4 players who will fit Koeman's plans and who will be prepared to earn their money.

Mate Jagielka scored a 30 yard screamer at the pit, is it something he does often - no, the benchmark is what you see them do regularly and McCarthy - you actually sit up and notice whenever he gets forward or does anything with positive intent.

Gueye is a mile better than McCarthy btw, as is Barry, McCarthy is effectively a engine on legs, and even that seems to have gone backwards the poast few seasons with various knocks

It's funny that loads on here claim McCarthy is awful yet the managers who have him in their squad choose him so often though. Martinez picked him when available, Koeman has slotted him in whenever there has been opportunity and he's a regular for Ireland.

I think it also speaks volumes of those sides too because if they were much better teams then McCarthy wouldn't need to be in the starting line up. We need a creative midfielder alongside Gueye and Barry in my opinion. Barkley has his strengths, but we can't rely on him as our Arteta type player.

McCarthy was poor yesterday, but he wasn't the only one. It was his first game back after injury so he has an excuse, but he had a chance to try and impress the manager yesterday and pretty much failed.

Sadly, for much of the match he looked like a player going through the motions who knew he won't start against Soton. I like McCarthy, but he needs to up his game or he'll be gone.

Mate both LVG and Mourinho have hardly played Schneiderlin who is a very good player, instead opting to play Fellaini as a defensive midfielder when he is absolutely terrible there, sometimes managers make strange decisions on playing players, Osman playing on the wing for the best part of 2-3 seasons for Moyes, Neville being Captain and first name on the team sheet when he could barely run near the end, Shoehorning Lescott in ahead of Baines at left back, the list could go on for ever really.

Agree what you said about showing the quality of the teams though, in a squad with a good starting 11 and depth then i honestly couldn't see McCarthy getting near it, which highlights our problem, we don't have a good starting 11 and we very much lack any depth to the squad

McCarthy only ever looks alright and I use the term loosely when he has Barry in the team to babysit him.
Look at the games when McCarthy has played and Barry hasnt , he has been absolute pants.

I feel that he knows he's already gone come Jan.

Sad really, the McCarthy that burst onto the scene in Martinez' first year was absolutely brilliant - as good as Gueye is for us now.

The whole side is pants without Barry, which is a worry, at some point he is going to do what has happened to Jags and just come to and end, hopfully by then we have managed to get decent players in unlike the last window.

Barry is a bigger miss at Goodison I feel. He sort of dictates our play and starts things off. He is slow but has a good football brain. I watched him closely against West Ham and he bossed it in a subtle way.Away from home I feel he's less effective. Gets booked alot. When he got his 5th yellow against Chelsea I feared we'd miss him against Swansea. And we did. As you say, its a bit worrying and I agree we need to sort a replacement soon.
