I actually think the game is getting older. We’re seeing those who are coming to the end of their careers extending them, prob due to being the first generation to benefit from modern S&C. Benzama in line for the BOD for example. The game is as she ever was a Chara, bar Dias and Gabriel the top performing centre backs were all over 28 last season.

If that’s the argument then why not sign some lower league defenders? The vastly lower wages will more than offset the transfer fee.

Absolutely, but for me it’s as much psychological as anything else.

Williams and Tarkowski were both perceived as these kind of lionhearted warriors at the heart of the defence of plucky underdogs. People think they’ll bring that same level of intensity and application to us, but the truth is once they feel any kind of expectation at all they’ll crumble.

If Tarkowski plays well: just think, he’s doing that for BURNLEY! If he plays crap: guys, he can’t win every game by himself, he plays for BURNLEY!! Win-win.

Every fibre of my being - and I’ll balance this out by once again admitting I thought Klaasen would be a great signing - tells me this signing would be a big mistake.

Williams was spent at the euros 16. Was never the same player For Everton or wales after.
Tarkowski may or may not work out, but Williams is not the marker for this.

Can’t help but think Holgate gets an overall bad press on here, in a way he’s almost dismissed. I thought he was super toward the end of the season, one of those who stood up and manned up in the trenches, he provided some key moments for us no more than in goal involvement through and showing will and desire, he didn’t bottle it like one or two others, I won’t forgot that, I want lads like that in the squad.
