We need depth badly to cope with injuries when they pile up.

But the bette ridea would be to get our own youngsters stepping p to fill the gaps rather than buy players. Browning, Lundstrum, kennedy, garbutt etc would be bette roff filling gaps and then dropping back to where they are rather than spend money on a back up player who, like gibson, will spend time kicking their heels unless injuries pile up.

I disagree with most people here, whilst we do need a back up to Barkley, a box to box midfielder has always been needed for a slong as i can remember, every great team has a holding midfielder and a real powerhouse, players like Yaya Toure, Gerrard, Vieria & such have been key to a teams success, I would describe McCarthy as a box to box player but not attacking, i thought Mo Diame would of been a great addition to drive the team forward.

besic is mccarthy's replacement tbh. again, won't contribute many goals. diame should have been bought a couple of years back imo, he fitted the bill perfectly and has started to add even more goals to his name at hull. personally i think ross is that player for the future - with the way we started in defence, i'm not sure we could afford to be too attacking. the main role of our two centre mids is to break up play and start attacks, a bit different to a city style.

I was thinking the Gerrard, Alonso & Mascherano trio. The destroyer, the playmaker & the driving force. It was a cracking Midfield regardless fo them playing for the other lot, we have Barry (destroyer) Mccarthy is no Alonso but does his fair share of regaining possession, can barkley be the driving force ? Time will tell.
