Plenty, cost too much and if they wouldn't sell in the summer then why would they sell now?

Football manager isn't real? You can't just buy who you want by sending them buds over and over again until you win

In fairness

Mane, Lallana, Clyne... They have been three of their best players this season. Lovren is starting to resemble his old self as well...
It took 2 managers though to do that though and up to 3 years at least to get them to a point of looking like good signings.

My point was signing him isn't a statement signing the same way them lot signing all they have weren't statement signings either.

Think we will agree to disagree on this one. Signing the best and most sought after centre half in the premier league would indeed be a real coup and a real statement.

OK look at it this way.

If city signed him or Chelsea then he would be lauded as potential top centre half right? Would he recieve the same publicity if he signed for us? Probably not, meaning he wouldn't be a statement signing. If we signed varane or whoever then that is a statement signing.

But it works both ways, cahill was lauded the same as Virgil is now and Chelsea signed him and he got next to no stament signing buzz. He has been a mainstay in their team winning titles and cups yet was never Tje statement signing for them as he stepped up a level.

So if Virgil came here, it would be seen as a sideways step and therefore not the statement signing the op originally believes.

Ash, it would be seen as a statement for the club, definitely.

Though it would be seen as a sideways step by the media.

Pickford
VVD
Amavi
Schneiderlin
Depay
Ademola
Dolberg

That would totally transform our team.

...........................Pickford

Coleman.....Williams....VVD....Baines

.......Gueye....Barkley...Schneiderlin

Deulofeu............Lukaku............Depay

Subs
Stekelenburg
Holgate
Amavi
Davies
Ademola
Calvert-Lewin
Dolberg

+some young lads like Walsh pushing through...

that bench is horrific. Where's half of our squad gone? We need some sort of experience to call up on, not 6 kids. We have loads of money, we don't have to splash it all on potential and wait 5 or 6 years for it to come to fruition.

Yep, the media would consider it a strange move.

Probably not as strange as Varane coming to Everton, mind, which is the example Ash used.

Regardless, VVD ain't coming here. It would be a strange move for him, and S'ton. I don't think he's going anywhere until the summer.
