I have always held the blind belief that had we won that shootout that night, we would have went all the way. None of the teams after that were as good as fiorentina, we had anti football rangers in the semi final and had beaten the finalists already in the group so a horrible slice of bad luck stopped us i think.

Wasn't bad luck mate l, yeah we played brilliantly at goodison, but we got absolutely bummed everywhere in Italy, over the two games in the tie the better team went through. Revisionism at its best to think otherwise.

that is true, but it came down to a shootout in the end. I believe at the time fiorentina were the strongest team we could have faced (correct me if i am wrong) but back then they were very good. So i don't think PSV/Rangers/Zenit would have put up the same opposition, although in hindsight with moyes in charge he would have bottled the final

Fiorentina was and still is a half decent team, Zenit were also good but didn't realise it until that year, guess that's why the first major trophy is good for starting a winning mentality. Gutted we didn't win it that year, Fiorentina at home Is one of my favourite nights.

You on the wind up again ;)
haha no mate, promise. I'm very rarely on the wind-up, I just loved Bobby!!
Apparently we went in for him at the last minute in the summer...

The Ukraine international was wanted by Everton on deadline day
Everton failed in a last-ditch attempt to land Andriy Yarmolenko - because they left it too late.

The Toffees were unable to lure Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle on deadline day, while Lamine Kone and Cuca Martino stayed put at Sunderland and Southampton respectively.

Dynamo Kiev have claimed that the Sissoko situation prompted Everton to make a move for Yarmolenko as they wanted to bring a playmaker to the club, report the Liverpool Echo.

But Kiev have said while they were happy to accept Everton’s bid, the lack of time made it impossible to complete a deal.

“Everton submitted a bid for Yarmolenko one hour and 15 minutes prior to the deadline,” said Kiev president Ihor Surkis.

Romelu Lukaku keeps quiet over possibility of new Everton deal

“I was satisfied with the transfer price but we did not have time to even draw up a contract.

“I was satisfied with the offer as long as Andriy was. Transfer bids cannot be submitted that late.”

Everton failed with a similar late attempt to sign Yarmolenko 12 months ago having had an earlier offer rejected by Kiev.

But Everton left their move for him too late in the day
Yarmolenko has reportedly been keen on a move to Goodison for some time, and in February when asked whether it was better to have a guaranteed place at Everton or be a substitute at Barcelona, he said: “It is better to play at Everton.

“Of course you can go to Barcelona, make a cool selfie with (Lionel) Messi , put the images on Instagram and get a million likes and be pleased with yourself. But I’m not one of those.

“For me it is important to play matches.”

So the fella we couldn't sign with weeks of negotiations and we went back on deadline day of all times ready to spend money and got a no?
