January Transfer Thread 2017

With the amount of players we need, we have to pick up probably 2 lesser-known bargains for every single £20m+ signing.

We could do with 10 players over the next two windows, with a similar amount leaving.

Not necessarily this January, but it would be good to make one "statement" signing also, just to add confidence and aid momentum.

The next two windows really will be a big test for everyone at the club - in attracting players, in spending money, in lowering the age of the squad, and making the best/most creative use of the funds available.

Surely this is a hugely challenging, but also exciting task. RK and SW may well get the opportunity of rebuilding from an almost blank canvas.

We will have a lot of answers this year, good, bad, or otherwise.

There is a point to that, I guess we have to show some trust that players signed this month are genuine targets that RK/SW would have wanted to sign in the summer anyway, and we still need to finish as high as we can.

My concern is being able to sustain the amount of investment required over the next 2-3 windows, a good January even though it would be very welcome isn't going to be game-changing for us unless we repeat in the summer.
We hardly spent a thing in the summer compared to what we thought we were going to, yes plenty if incoming player but Stones off set the spend. There must be money left for this window and the next. Its a long term plan so I would hope there is cash set aside for the next few seasons.

Was just about to mention something similar to this.

We need a rebuilding job, throwing 50m at players at this present time is what we could do without. Would like Van Dijk sure, but he doesn't solve more pressing issues in the team. Would much rather two 20million or so defenders such as Michael Keane. We need a solid foundation to build on.

I do agree we need a marquee signing soon. But we have to be smart with our funds. I don't remember the likes of Spurs spending in excess of 50m on first team players. Even them lot and they're challenging for the league.

I think we could get a ready made Keeper, CB, Midfielder and Creative attacker for around the 70 million mark. That's without signing cheaper prospects.

I actually thought we would have someone in by dinnertime today.

We are desperate for new players, especially after the windfall of Stones and subsequent dartboard 'he will do' approach on deadline day.

We have had months to prepare for January.

We need to spend way over the odds.
That was how City established themselves. We have no choice if we are looking to compete for talent.

Watching on Friday evening it was so frustrating to see that we drew that game due to old legs in defence and midfield.

Some no mark was able to run 30 yards before conning the ref to give a free kick out of Baines.

As soon as Davies came on we totally dominated the game. Just basic errors.

Pace is a staple of any modern footballer.

The current Liverpool team is full of average footballers in peak athletic form.

I cannot understand how people earning millions of pounds a year cannot solve this basic problem, be it from within or via the transfer market.
You've nailed it there mate

Sensible post, really do rate VVD, but the time to get him was when he was at Celtic. Got Chelsea written all over him, agree with Michael Keane the next up and coming. £50 m is a lot of money for one player, good as he is, when practically your whole squad needs a overhaul.
