A good scouting system and we dont need to be going for players on extortionate wages.

We should be getting players like Onana before he becomes 30 odd mil pound player
That’s the dream but easier said than done. Some of our best signings have been from lower league teams, Jags, Lescott, Baines, Cahill, some have been players whose careers have flopped after big moves, Arteta and Pienaar. I think it all comes down to the wages Philips is on and his attitude.

I dont think attitude would be a problem he doesnt look that type of player (i maybe wrong)

He is a good player and wouldnt say no but i would be looking elsewhere first, i dont think we gain that much for a 6 month loan on high wages.

Is my memory right.......is he not a bit injury prone.

I always liked him.

In fact i think we were in for him in at one stage when Leeds were in the Championship - might have been under Brands.

Phillips’ injury history is concerning enough to avoid the deal tbh. But that’s the only reason, in my opinion. If you become averse to signing anyone that is over 26, and your main objective is to sell a promising player as soon as they start realising their potential, then you have become a small club.

There are loads of examples of good deals for older players. Not just with Everton, but you can easily point to the likes of Trippier at Newcastle. He has become their talisman, and was signed at 31 years of age. Signings like that can also change the perception of a club for the better.

If he was available and willing to join on loan it would be a no brainer. I don’t care if it results in Onana sitting on the bench. If Onana was that good, then he’d be keeping Phillips on the bench, like Rico Lewis is doing at City

Good point on Trippier mate, i would have tutted at Newcastle for that one - but he's been the best full back in the league since he signed - brilliant.

"We can't get Phillips because he's on city wages...but erm...yeah...in fact we pay city level wages anyway so we can realistically get him."

Maybe put your thinking cap on before you post back to back posts that contradict each other.

Dave I don’t think that’s what he was saying.

….I’m wary of players like Phillips who make big money moves to Man City and fail to make an impression. i’d be concerned about whether playing still matters to him and I wouldn’t be signing him on big bucks to find out.
He does seem a bit Danny Drinkwater

Didn't he show up to City unfit/overweight?

Looking at the players who have just a year:
Gomes
Gueye
Doucoure
Dele
Young
Coleman

Loans - Danjuma and Harrison

We need midfielders plus wing backs in but a good mix of experience and youth.

I like Blackburn's Adam Wharton. He has a bit about him but he is a £10m plus player.

I think we should be scouting in the Championship because there is a lot of talent there if you take a risk.

In fairness Onana could still turn out to be a very profitable deal if he progresses to the level we hope. We’ve just seen the sort of prices Caicedo Casemiro Rice have gone for, even Phillips previously. We could easily double our money on Onana, similar to what we did with Richarlison.

Loaning Phillips for the rest of the season for cover/Afcon? I can see that. Buying him? Not a chance based on everything we have seen over the past 2 years.

I also think they will eye a loan for a fullback to see if they can get a good player lined up to compete at either LB or RB. Then I think the rest of the window will be spent talking to players who are out of contract in 6 months to see who we can sign on a free in the summer.
