Joel Robles

I was really hoping Robles who had played so well up to the Spurs game might get the job full-time
but today's second goal was bad as have been a number of recent goals.

He is still only 23 years so he can remedy his errors but the free-kick was bad. Firstly Robles is a giant
so he should not be beaten in the air; he should have jumped with two arms not one; should have known that Albrighton
likes to surprise with a shot.

He's 27 in 6 weeks mate

Yes he would have but he didn't and it didn't. Just a standard goalkeeping position to make the save would have been fine.

Some made excuses being trotted out for him.

It happens though. Most goalkeepers make mistakes, the standards currently are not great.

I don't think his position was wrong though, he probably needs to have a look at his footwork as he got caught out by a fluke cross/shot.

Pickford is twice the keeper Joel is, its crazy that some think he's not even an upgrade.

Based off what exactly?

He looked poor when we played them, similarly Joel has probably looked great from an outsiders point of view.

Pickford is really young so has a lot to learn still and is playing in a team facing loads of shots each game. he may be good, he also may be another David Marshall who everyone thought was great because he was playing for a poor Cardiff team who were getting battered every week.

Pickford may end up being good, but right now we don't need someone with potential, Robles has potential. If we are to improve the goalkeeping position then we need the finished article.

finished articles cost Millions , and a high wage - we need a young promising keeper to give Robles competition, and bin the Stek no way should we have signed a Fulham keeper!
who has dodgy knees!

We have money now. We need to stop acting like it was 5 years ago.

Stekelenberg will be going nowhere unless he wants first team football, he is a trusted member of the squad for Koeman. I don't think he was ever brought in with the intention of being first choice.

Bringing in a promising young keeper just gives you 3 keepers of similar ability. We need results now not in five years.

I'm not saying we sign Buffon or someone by the way!

Yes we have money, but out field we need at least 6 players left back cover- central defence cover - a playmaker - two forwards, another wide man - our squad is aging - Stek to me is a championship keeper his age - his injuries the Fulham fans forgot he was on their books!

Sorry , obviously you see far more of Pickford than me, what I've seen has impressed me though. Likewise , while I've never been fully convinced by Robles, he's becoming a better goalie than I thought. I think your right overall and Pickford will be the better keeper. He may choose to stay loyal and spend his career with you anyway. It's a bit arrogant of me to assume we could just reach out and pluck him away.
I would like him, but Sunderland are skint nearly relegated other clubs will be eying him up the fee will be high and we need that sort of money to splash else where 5-6 players - jags barry cant go on for ever same with baines who we have no cover at all now!

Yeah maybe so, but if he is to be third choice then that is about right isnt it?

Stekelenberg has been around and played in a World Cup final. He probably offers something in terms of experience to our other keepers. I am perfectly fine with him being at the club.

I agree with needing other players which is why I dont think the GK position is that much of an issue. If we can get a vast improvement then great, if we cant and we are only going to bring someone of a similar level in for "competition" then we may as well leave it for now and focus on more pressing areas.

I don't think Robles has it in him to become a really top class keeper. He can be a very good one, and in fairness I think he's nearly there now. He's still only 26 and in goalkeeping terms still learning the game. But a proper top class keeper can be worth 10 points every season and that would certainly help us get regular CL football. So that needs to be our aim.

Ideally we would sign that class of keeper straightaway but, realistically, who could we feasibly get that would be prepared to come here. Possibly only Jack Butland, and even then we need to see how he recovers from over a season out with serious injuries. I just don't see the point in splashing out serious money on a keeper who is only going to be a small step up at best on what we have now. There are other area's of the team that need serious repair work, and that's without the potential loss of Rom and Ross. Unless we are able to sign somebody of Butlands class, we should concentrate on improving the other positions where our need is greater.

As regards Robles, I think he's coming in for a lot of unfair criticism at the moment. Take yesterday's game for example. If Lukaku had scored that first goal we would have been lauding it as a fantastic, cool, clinical finish. But no, it goes down as a keeping error. The second goal I can understand the shouts for a keeping error. What I will say in Joel's defence, is that this season he has been vastly improved in coming and collecting crosses in his own area and has probably been as anyone in the league at this. For the second goal, he set himself for the cross and was therefore a bit flatfooted when Allbrighton, intentionally or not, went for goal. It was in the top corner anyway and hit with plenty of whip, so I'm still not sure he would have got there had he stayed in his line. It was very similar to Rooney's 250th Man Utd goal and I haven't heard one commentator criticise Stokes keeper for that goal. Would we have liked him to have done better for both goals?. You bet. Should they go down as obvious errors or clangers?. Not in my view. The other thing to acknowledge is that neither goal would have even got as far as Robles had the defenders done their job properly.

Same with the other recent mistakes being highlighted. He was absolutely clobbered after the derby but I could only put the last goal down as a definite error as he sold himself and made it easy for Origi. The first 2 goals again were really poor defending and good finishes that Robles didn't really have any chance of stopping. The Spurs game I would blame him for terrible decision making for their second goal when he rolled the ball out to Schneids. But again, Schneids was equally culpable in that goal but nobody's even mentioned his role in it since. But it's wheeled out at every opportunity in this thread.

In the premier there are 3 stand out keepers at United, Chelsea and Spurs, and possibly a 4th at Stoke if Butland get's his form back after injury. Joel is very much in that next group alongside the likes of Forster, Cech, Heaton & Schmeicel. Our aim should be to go for one of the elite keepers and I wouldn't complain if we brought one in even though I would prefer us to concentrate on other areas of need. But I would complain if we wasted good money on one of these other keepers who are, in my opinion, no great improvement on Robles.

He's in a side that concedes a hell of a lot more shots than Everton, that concedes better chances than Everton and that offers less protection than Everton.

And he still saves a greater percentage of shots on goal than Joel.

Pickford has been playing representative football for the national side his whole career
