John Stones transfer saga

This is where all those fans who bang on about us being a selling club will feel the pain now if we do sell precisely because we haven't been a selling club. Despite all the media speculation I've never been that worried about Stones Barkley Baines Coleman or McCarthy leaving, meanwhile Liverpool Tottenham, Southampton and even Arsenal for a period were flogging their best players every season. Liverpool have just shrugged off selling Suarez and Sterling back to back yet we'll go into a season of mourning if we sell Stones precisely because we're not a selling club. Still won't stop the usual blerts ignoring the reality of modern football which affects all teams and making out that we are the only selling club in the prem.

The majority of clubs are labelled as selling clubs. But, we have had to sell to survive, that's the major difference.

It'd have to be close to £50m for us to entertain it. Non starter - we don't want or need to sell, lad is happy at the club, has a good head on his shoulders and understands his progression is perfect right now and it'd be stupid to "Jeffers" the whole thing up.

Not worried in the slightest.

People need to chill out players leave and the sky doesn't fall, we're not a billionaire run club and sadly some need to accept the reality of players and the fact some want trophies.

I won't be upset if he leaves, because footy is run on money, something we don't have.
koff with your reasoned thinking bryzzz

As some have already said this is just the beginning of Chelsea's & maybe now others, pursuit of the player.

Sadly I tend to think it's a case of when not if Stones is sold with football being the way it is these days. We are however in a very strong situation when it comes to negotiations & fee, Stones being English, young & a current full international.

If you consider Luke Shaw, a left back, went for £30m & looking at the fee Man City just forked out on Raheem Sterling (who lets not forget made it clear he wanted to leave!), I really think we would be looking at £40m to £50m overall.
Chelsea are pretty smart when it comes to transfers. They might pay 30m but it's pointless comparing him to Sterling since attacking players are far more expensive.

diagree mate, Easy to pick up a bargain down the leagues. We signed stones for so little because he had only entered the team. You actually scout the players and know what you are looking for then signing them cheaply isnt the issue. You let them gain experience and all of a sudden the price tag then goes up
Mate even someone like Mings cost 8 mil and hes unproven.

If we pick up a prospect, we then have to blood him in for a few seasons, take a few mistakes, then once we're about to reap the benefits in swoops one of the big boys who take him away.

I agree with all that mate, but change Stones to Rooney and its the same thing just in a modern context. It might be unrealistic but as fans there is something pure in identifying, developing and enjoying senior players. I like to think the club could share that philosphey - maybe that is unrealistic, given the power players have.

Another worry, would be would be the domino effect and encouragement to other clubs via Barkley, Cloeman, Lukaku etc.
If you're not mega bucks City or Chelsea you're getting stripped of talent. That's the way it works unfortunately.

The difference with the Rooney affair was that he was the beacon of hope in a pretty uninspiring team. Stones is one of a clutch of rising stars.

As said, I hope we keep him. It's just that I dont see the sky falling in if we sell for a massive fee.

Btw would they have bid if they hadn't been given some indication from the players reps that he'd be interested?

Didn't Hughes used to bid 7 mill combined for Cahill and Arteta when at Blackburn. Similarly Moyes for Baines and Fellaini, Arsenal for Suarez. All rejected.

Baines was off to Utd forever yet he's still here. If stones wants to stay then we won't sell. If he wants to go and we sell we'll get 40m at least (we got 28 for felli). Imo I think he's here until at least after Euros

Ha Ha.

I underlined (and underline again) I'm against any sale. It's just that if he stays we are going to work with a very good player on the way to being a top class player and that some club will then take him away.

If the price is stupid money then maybe we can use that to better effect.

£30M from Stones = Van Dijk foir £10M and £20M plus tv cash available toward a new forward/playmaker/winger.
As we develop him he will increase in price. With the Euros next summer he would be mad to leave and sit on Chelsea's bench. If he stays and plays every game with us he could play his way into starting the Euros which could double his value especially if he has a good tournament.

He's going to become Everton and England captain and one of, of not the best centre back in the world. How do you put a price on that?

I'd still be very disappointed if he went for £60mil.

I agree with you in 99% of what you come out with on various subjects but not this.

Hes easily in our top 3 players already, hes got the highest potential out of anyone ive seen play for us since rooney, vault me he'll be the finest CB of his generation.

When the likes of coco the clown goes to psg for 50 mil, and even fat little beut shaw cost 30 mil, would be foolish to take 30-40 mil now when hes only getting better and better.

If we sell we have to get £30M plus add ons. No question.

The worst thing is, if he goes, who are we going to bring in? We're not in Europe and simply could not attract Champions League quality players because we're not in it. Just keep him!
