John Stones transfer saga

Yeah great, if you're playing footy manager. Most of us operate in the real world where replacing someone without the fee being over inflated or not as good as Stones is the only real result.
We might not be able to replace Stones with a player as good, but with that amount of money would could buy 2 very good players, as well as a couple of players to build out the squad.

I agree that there are plenty of examples of it going wrong, but to say that there's no way we could improve the squad with £40m seems a bit silly.

Hopefully we're going to keep Stones and spend money on improving in the necessary areas (back-up striker, creative mid etc.) but if we need to sell to do that then it's not clear to me that turning down £40 million is the best way to move forward.

No, by selling Stones, we won't be improving our squad. You could bring in 20 players and it wouldn't improve our squad.

Why can't people understand how good this kid is and is going to be?

This is worse than Rooney for me, at least with Rooney we needed the cash to keep afloat.

perhaps a wildly least likely scenario but ill suggest it anyway.

What if the sale of stones funded the number 10? imagine this, we are signing mori and yarmalenko and a number 10. but it came to the board and managers attention Chelsea were going to be signing stones for say 40 million. so martinez then decides to invest some of the money elsewhere, rather than go for 7 million praet for arguments sake he pushes the amount needed for a much better number 10 up to say 20 million. In that scenario van dijk would be coming as well as a centre half from Scotland is up martinezs avenue, despite him being Dutch lol

so yeah. crazy scenario but would we be better for that? Selling stones sure but his replacements were a very good prospect in dijk and a much better number 10 as well as yarm as an attacking player and mori the back up defender. perhaps even a cheeky lennon deal with the potential of pienner then leaving the club in Jan on a release for first team football?

at least it's technically possible, and yarm represents the board investment

I think it is quite obvious that none of our fans want to see Stones go, no matter what the outcome.

really hate to pop any bubbles here but selling JOhn Stones will not bring in the players some of you are drooling over. Big fees are one thing but if the player is actually worth that fee they will come with wage demands that we don't pay. Much more likely the teams we approach demand a fee that takes into account our windfall. As a rule you never, ever sell if you are desperate to spend.
Best case scenario we get a couple of overpriced players in who do better than expected but still nowhere near fee paid, worst case scenario we end up with some players on the bench crushed by the expectations of their fee but on higher wages than the rest of the squad and unwilling to leave till the end of their contract. John Stones will bring in so much revenue over the next few years if he becomes an England regular and eventually captain. Chelsea want that revenue. Some Everton fans seem to want them to have it in exchange for a couple of European journeymen.

I'm not sure Chelsea will bid again, then again they can't take a hint, isn't it obvious we don't want to sell him. We've told them 3 times and Martinez has said it twice.
We turned down there offers almost instantly, not like we've gone...hmmm waited 2 days and then said no making it look like we're mulling it over.
Maybe next bid we just ignore it then when they get all excited 2 days later after no reply, they phone us and we say what bid? O you bidded £40mil o okay, yeah he's not for sale

every possibilty this is already happening. papers reporting bids rejected but this could be their spin after chelsea contact them and say we have told them this much. maybe since the No Sale message we are not officially replying. Or maybe it has been left with some guy in the post room. 'any letter from Chelsea lad, don't open it, write 'return to sender' on it and staple a picture of the Everton kit with Stones 5 on it.'

None of us know what John Stones wants to do and that is the crucial factor.

It is obvious that Chelsea are now depending on John Stones agitating for a move and if he doesn't it is unlikely there will be another bid imo.
It is also obvious the earlier lower bids were aimed at unsettling the player rather than being a serious attempt to buy the player at that price.

I think that if John Stones were going to try to force through a move he would have done so by now, but we do not know what is happening in the background at the club.
All we can see is a player still performing well in the team and still apparently happy and that is all we can really go by.

and even if he slightly favours a move, which seems questionable, we don't have to accept a transfer request and unless he is clear we would I can't see him wanting to rock the boat with four years on his contract. clearly not the kind of player to sulk

As if they'd put an Everton player on the front of FIFA

Even during the 80's that would have never happened

So long as Stones is still here, I'll be happy

Look at what Spurs bought with the Bale money. Look at what the Rs bought with the Suarez money, the Torres money, etc. This is what happens when you sell a player for a lot of money. Everyone and their mother knows you have money to spend, and need to spend it to replace the sold player. You get gouged.

There is no centre back even half as good as Stones available right now, and we'd end up paying 20m+ for whatever mediocrity we'd target.

No thanks.

on the radio now the 'Stones not worth the money' face-saving propaganda is coming into full swing. its all over.
