John Stones transfer saga

People romanticizing about the good old days when football wasn't about money do realise we were nicknamed the mersey millionares during one of our most successful periods? 'Real' football can be watched at the park on a Sunday - but it's not very good really. Like it or not we enjoy watching Everton, and premier league football, because of the quality on show. Unfortunately silly sums of money go with the territory.

We shouldn't be throwing ourselves overboard at what's happened. Stones is contracted as an Everton player, with many obligations, for another four years. Transfer request or not, we are in a very strong position here. This coupled with Chelsea's desperate need for a quality centre back means we can hold out for £40m+ or just tell Stone's he's got games to play for another four years.

Either we take a ridiculous amount of money for a player that has not fulfilled his potential yet. Or we keep him for four years at least.

It's that simple. It's win-win for us.

Sell - but get the right deal for us. 45M min. Put all the money back into the club - this window if possible. Martinez will surely have expected this, and if he's as good a manager as many think, this will be an opportunity for him to demonstrate.

For all his strengths, he's not the finished defensive article yet. His ability on the ball is miles beyond any young CB I've seen. However he's still prone to defensive errors.

You can already see exactly what will happen here. He will make a blockbuster move to Chelsea, he will instantly become a starter, but he won't be ready to make that step yet, Chelsea the club and more importantly the fans will expect him to slot right in. He will make notable mistakes as he is still developing and these will potentially cost Chelsea at important points. He will subsequently be dropped, and he will drift into obscurity.

He would do a lot better staying here for another year, play along still Jags and continue his development.

We can all appreciate in today's world, money talks.

I wish the lad all the best, he's been a joy to watch, a real breath of fresh air. I really just hope that his request doesn't come back to haunt him.

If anyone's to be accused of double-crossing it should be John Stones. He's had weeks to put a transfer request in but leaves it until there's a week of the transfer window left. The club have consistently said he's not for sale so Stones has followed the advice of his suitors and put a transfer request in. I don't blame the club at all for this and can't see what they have done wrong. It's the way of football, unfortunately.

So... you don't blame the club for...

Actually, you know what, cba essay writing right now, do what you want mate, clap away.

It's not really win win is it...

We will be left with one centre back who has played in the premier league and what use it £40m when its not all going to be reinvested in the team ?

Top bantz.

The performance against City was reasonable, i'd like to see you justify your use of the words 'pub team'.
...perhaps 'pub team' was overly pejorative, I'll concede that. But there was daylight (imo) between the quality of performance of City and Everton. I want to see that chasm bridged. Selling the players who will effect that bridge is mind-numbingly nonsensical (especially so when I genuinely believe that the player sale will appear in this years accounts as adverse movement in working capital, manifested cash-wise in next years other operating costs...maybe I have become too cynical...supporting Everton does that to a person

If it's true that we don't have to sell, the board need to come out and put a substantial price tag on him (Sterling +50%) and say if it's not met he is not going anywhere. He has years on his contract and would soon come back into line.

Too many young English talents have gone to big clubs and sat on the bench. It is ruining the national game.
