makes me want to cry, some of the nonsense in here

21yo. plays the ball like a virtuoso. confident and a very good passer.

but no, lets over analyse his game and make sure we make quick judgements because of a few mistakes as its not like the history of the whole bloody sport has not taught us to cut young players some slack.

at least Dave is on windup with his guff

It's probably the hardest position to play for a young player and mistakes are part and parcel of his learning curve. I hope everyone on the board can still recognise the fact he's quality, and will likely go onto have a career at the very top of the game.

Reckon most of this is down to the fact that Martinez isn't the right coach to be developing the defensive side of his game?

Personally think he'd be flourishing a lot more under a more defensively astute coach.
How on earth is it Martinez's fault Stones turned infield under huge pressure to present a poor GK with a 40/60 ball?

The lad's not a defender. In that respect it's the manager's fault playing him there. But once on the pitch simple calculations like that should be within the arsenal of any outfield player.

Have you noticed Suarez comments saying he miss the R's fans and how wonderful they are and how great this was to play at anfield. Don't think stones will be saying the same about us

I wonder how great the Anfield crowd would've been if they were languishing in 12th after losing 2-1 at home to Swansea.

I'm not though. I've said it from day one that Stones is not a defender he's better further up the pitch. Got absolutely slaughtered for it too. I dont think many would be so dismissive now though.

He very much is a defender and will likely go onto have a career at the top of the game in that position.

I just think it'd be pretty logical that Martinez isn't the best coach to develop the defensive aspect of his game. Positioning is something that can be worked on tirelessly at the training ground. Even the most average of centre halves can become part of a cohesive defensive unit. I don't think much work is being done at Finch Farm on this though.

It's not much of a big deal to admit that Martinez probably isn't getting the best out of him. There's players like Deulofeu who do benefit a lot from his style.

I dont think it has to do with coaching at all. Yeah, you can get a few extra % with anyone in any position if you put the effort into it. But Stones doesn't look like a player who enjoys defending or has a feel for it. You see CB's like Collins at WHU and though he's limited in technique you know he's found his niche doing the basics. Not so Stones. He looks like he'd rather run a mile from that sort of heavy lifting and just wants to tidy up loose balls in the box and step out with it. Nice work if you can get it as a player like, but defenders are there to defend all scenarios.

To be fair in Stones's breakthrough 12-18 months he was playing like a CB's CB. I remember him playing with a big bandage on his head and sliding everywhere, getting mugged off by no one.

Seems to have become more of a wuss of late, though perhaps it's just the fickle veneer of public perception.
