John Stones

The coaching could have been better.

The fans could have been better.

Since Christmas, Stones himself could have been better.

At the end of the day this is a 21-year-old who has been through a rough patch of form where our own fans wanted him dropped.

Then he got injured and suddenly it's 'Why isn't Martinez playing Stones laaaaaaa', when he was simply being eased back while Funes-Mori and Jags were playing well.

I expect him to start most (if not all) of the games coming up for the rest of the season.

not trying to cross threads here but replace the manager, you will see a much better stones in 12 months. He needs to be taught basics, which include hoofing it at the slightest look of danger.

the fans only reflect what is on the pitch, its a cop out for anyone at the club including the manager, to blame them for poor performances. Of course they are booing the team roberto, they are losing at home again due to defensive issues, in march!

You mean a different manager like Hodgson, who despite wanting him to cut down on the risks has told him explicitly not to do that?

You look at the best ball-playing defenders in Europe.

None of them hoof it.

It's the problem with this country and young footballers. They will be vilified as soon as a mistake is made - barring they play for a media-darling team.

Rose was more at fault than Stones was for their goal last night. But is he getting the blame?

One of the best youngsters this country has produced in a long time.

Will be crucified by the media.

If he played for Spurs, Liverpool, heck, even West Ham, it wouldn't be happening.
Tend to think if he wasn't English they'd leave him be.
This time three years ago he had played 20 times for Barnsley but by last summer he was going to walk into the champions of England's team and play like Beckenbauer. Every single media outlet and pundit should have been getting on Mourinho's back and saying it was far too early.
It's not just the media England and Everton should have had enough decent centre halves that this lad wasn't in so much glare of publicity for so long.
He looks a strong enough lad to get through this and still become a Goodison legend. Don't care less about England though.

The best defenders probably got warned off cruyff turning and poor positioning as well at a young age, or at least protected at 21 rather than being made the star of the team. That is why it is fustrating to see Stones this season, he just needs support, Guidance, something to take the flak off him so if he doesn't perform well then it doesn't really matter. I just feel for a very specific reason, he is being hung out to dry currently, and is becoming yet another deflection tool for that specific reason to remove blame for many things.

there is nothing wrong with a young player making mistakes, but yes even the best ball playing centre halves hoof the ball when they need to mate, its defending 101, clear the danger.

But slipping is also unlucky mate
You can say that pabbers, but it's about decision making. The benefits of an eye catching turn on the edge of the area do not outweigh the risks if it goes wrong. There's a time and a place for the fancy stuff and he needs to learn that - we've seen it at Goodson as well. Saying that, he's young and he's worth being patient with while he learns the game. No problem with the press pointing out his error though.

keepers and centre backs develop at a later age, virtually anyone who knows anything about football knows this. Most people are still in education at 21, it's still a very young age in every day life, nevermind the pressure these footballers are under.

Typically, true.

Some of his recent errors brings back memories of Busquets in 2008 who also made costly mistakes when a simpler option was available

I do, because they are not consistent with the other players.

Rose was also at fault, and almost caused another pen, and was out of position all the time.....if that was Baines....
