Tell that to Raphael Varane though? Or Laporte? Or that lad at Hoffenheim whose name I can't remember? Or Marquinhos at PSG? Or Gimenez at Atletico/Uruguay? More to be mentioned here, but that's just off the top of my head.

Or as far as goalkeepers go - De Gea, Courtois, ter Stegen, Hart, Butland... Loads of others are first teamers and also national keepers and are under or around 25 with 100-odd games under their belts.

The above statement is only half-right (at best) now, and people should stop being under the illusion that it's still like that. Perhaps back in the day (LOL @ Goat's Baresi comparison) it was like that, but now? Not really. Age barrier is very much lowered with the newer generations - you've got access to technologies and training (and doping drugs @FCBarça ) that just wasn't around before, it's only natural players develop quicker.

i know that, but they'll still develop later than other positions - they'll still be making mistakes - De Gea looked woeful when he first came here, a couple of extra years and he's world class.

but as the commentators pointed out, him coming out of the back with the ball doing just that is what created the england goal.

take the smooth with the rough.
Come on now, you know very well there is a big difference between where such incidents took place. Stones looks fine when playing passes closer to the centre circle. Things go awry when playing passes near his own area (and usually towards his own goal).

All signs continue to point to him being utilised in defensive midfield. Replacement for Barry perhaps?

Not particularly.

He made a mistake but Forster covered as any good keeper should (something Howard hadn't done all season for a young defender). Then Rose came charging out with his arms everywhere and conceded the penalty.

Stones made the mistake but he's 21, he's a player who's still learning.

Alli was awful when he came on last night, did nothing but give the ball away.

That doesn't mean he's a bad player.

Stones had a good game yesterday, a solid one and his first full 90 minutes in 2 months - playing in a position at left centre half he has never played before. That pass to Milner for the opener was superb, as was his throughball to Walcott.

IMO he's a centre half and should stay there. Midfield could be an option, but I'd rather see him flourish in his position than become a utility player.

You can say that pabbers, but it's about decision making. The benefits of an eye catching turn on the edge of the area do not outweigh the risks if it goes wrong. There's a time and a place for the fancy stuff and he needs to learn that - we've seen it at Goodson as well. Saying that, he's young and he's worth being patient with while he learns the game. No problem with the press pointing out his error though.

As somebody has correctly pointed out, Forster looked awkward with the ball whenever he had it.

The pass was on for Stones but he backed himself to get out of the situation rather than put his teammate in that awkward position.

He slipped and that was that, but again Rose was the one who gave away the pen.

The press haven't just pointed out his error, they've said he shouldn't be starting and is regressing. It's ridiculous.

He's better at football than any of us put together ever will be. He'll re-find his form.

Last night was his first full 90 minutes in over two months...

Ball ended up in the back of the net. It happens. Was it avoidable? Easily.

Yes it was.

Pretty much every goal is 'avoidable'...

Was the slip avoidable, yeh, of course...

Was Rose lunging out with his arms flying everywhere after Forster had made the stop - yeh, it was...

Get a grip pal.

I don't give a jot about England in all honesty.

Other than the mistake, which led to Danny Rose conceding the penalty, Stones had a solid game and a decent return to international footy and a good 90 minutes, as well as instigating England's goal and setting up what should have been a second if Walcott was any good.

Don't disagree with any of that, other than the get a grip bit. People react to criticism of our players in an overly defensive way. No need.

He should have played it back to Forster then made an angle for the return pass.

I hope Hodgson sticks with him, there is potential in the partnership with Smalling.

That world class England defender 'Jason Cundy' is coming up with his thoughts on Stones........

EDIT : Its ok, he likes him.
