John Stones

Pity about the slip, he was having a very good game he played a great pass to set up the goal and an even better one in the second half that could of been a goal.

RM should stop mucking about and get him back into the team alongside Mori or Jags but get him back in. It is game time he needs. Wakey, Wakey Roberto.

This sums it up perfectly. All the positives about Stones have been what he did from an attacking perspective. Everything negative relates to his defensive play. In fact, I haven't heard anyone praise or indeed remark upon anything he did defensively.

Don't usually watch England friendlies but caught 1st half.I'm sure really early on stones held onto the ball in a vulnerable position, almost got caught out and you could hear a big moan from the crowd. So it's not just Everton fans that moan when a player puts his side under needless pressure.

All fans do that.

It us only on here that fans giving a collective groan when a move breaks down fir want of a simple, straightforward pass is regarded as heresy.

:(

The coaching could have been better.

The fans could have been better.

Since Christmas, Stones himself could have been better.

At the end of the day this is a 21-year-old who has been through a rough patch of form where our own fans wanted him dropped.

Then he got injured and suddenly it's 'Why isn't Martinez playing Stones laaaaaaa', when he was simply being eased back while Funes-Mori and Jags were playing well.

I expect him to start most (if not all) of the games coming up for the rest of the season.

I fail to see how the "fans could have been better".

We were singing songs about him for months even though he handed in a transfer request.

The fans have been very supportive of him......even if he did come across as an arrogant prat telling the Park Enders to pipe down when he started doing circus tricks in the shadow of the post in a game we weren't winning.

Our own fans were "wanting him dropped" because he was playing badly.

Simple as.

And I have yet to hear anyone at the match criticising Roberto for dropping him or bemoaning the fact Jags and Funes Mori are getting the nod ahead of him.

My view.....FWIW.

There is a growing realisation among both Evertonians and now the wider soccer world in England that young Mr. Stones is nowhere near the player people thought he was, or what he might become, twelve months ago.

The very fact people are now saying he would be better employed playing as a defensive midfielder rather than as a central defender is evidence of this new thinking.

And as you can now see, John ain't getting the easy ride from England watchers that he does from the fans who apparently are to blame for all his flaws......i.e. the Goodison faithful.

I thoroughly enjoy watching people writing off a 21 year old cb who has shown to be an utterly top class player (including defensively, for the start of this very season in fact) after a period of bad form. I will continue to enjoy it when he pipes you down, hopefully with another hand gesture, when he gets back to form and goes on to be one of the best cbs in the game.

He did fine defensively - bar that slip.

If a defender is having a great game it usually means there was a lot of defending to be done.

As it was a lot of the game was in midfield.

I've noticed that his mistakes tend to come when he's facing his own keeper, and tries to turn out of trouble. Facing forward he's been fine. Someone needs to tell him, at least for know, just to go back to the keeper if he's facing him, and then he can at least collect the return (if it's on) on the half turn and face the play. If he keeps making mistakes it'll affect him, but he can reduce the chance of making them, without having to lose the part of his game that makes him a special player.

It's down to him really though. If he keeps trying to beat forwards on the turn he will screw up again and it'll spiral. Keep it simple when needs be and regain the confidence needed to go back to making everyone else look a bit silly

Quite. The problem us that his team mates may become reluctant to pass to him for fear of him screwing himself into trouble, and this inviting pressure upon themselves. It's a stupid, selfish style of play that will win him no fans, and someone really needs to coach it out of him. And by that, I don't mean prevent him from ever doing it, just knowing when to use the most appropriate option.

Put him further up the pitch or sell him. He's a talented player but completely out of his depth playing CB.

I respect the likes of Hoddle, he's a thinker. And Martinez too. But their views on Stones are so out of whack with reality it's untrue. The lad cant even stay on his feet; he turns his back on shots in the box; cant physically hold off an attacker; is positionally poor.

What he has got is an ability to pick a forward pass and he has pace. Looks all the world like a box to box midfielder to me.

Will become the finest CB of his generation, oh I will laugh at his doubters.
Not sure there are any doubters in Stones. The argument is always whether the manager has developed him or ruined him. Personally, I think Martinez has treated him the right way. You have to let a naturally talented footballer express himself, rather than have so called technical ability trained into him. Stones is the most naturally talented defender of his generation, and quite possibly of many generations. He'd be much better off if everyone just let him get on with his game (including the mistakes) and ditto Martinez. Amazing how many forum dwellers are more equipped and qualified to 'manage' a player than a professional manager.
