John Stones

He's had a tough season and despite a really good start to it, his form has suffered

On Saturday I thought he was doing ok in the first half (although United's tactic seemed to be to let Stones receive the goal kicks short then press as soon as he got it and it seemed to have thrown us), in the 2nd half though I thought Stones absolutely magnificent. Got us out of jail at the back a few times when we we throwing men forward and he led the charge from the back himself with the ball. Lost count of the number of times he drove forward, playing one-twos and getting us moving. Brilliant, was really proud of his individual performance.

I desperately hope we keep him and a new manager gets the most out of him because he is an absolute Rolls Royce of a player

John Stones ...... a Rolls Royce. Just watch him move from the back with the ball at his feet.

It would be a hanging offence if he is allowed to leave
Time and time again, this phrase gets rolled out - 'Rolls Royce' - and praise is lavished upon him and his movement with the ball.

And yet folk think he's a defender.

Defenders defend. Midfielders do what Stones does, and does it very well.

One has to wonder whether the coaching staff at Barnsley were ever tempted to play him in midfield, or if they needed a defender and so played him there? To me, he seems like a midfielder doing his best to fulfill his mandated defensive duties.

I see him very much as the potential to be the English Beckenbauer - the Libero around whom the team functions.

To see him move forward is to watch a swan glide across a sun dappled pond whilst dragonflies dance attendance on a gentle zephyr that has enough puff in it to twitch the golden locks of a fair damsel who is dangling her pinkies in to the limpid water.

One of the arguments for keeping him as a CB is that it's bloody hard to find young CBs who are so good with the ball. Which I agree with.

Thing is though it's also bloody hard to find good young DMs.
What's so great about a CB who is so good with the ball? Are they in short supply or short demand?

The former, and high demand. At the high end of the game where they can be coached to be defensively solid too (our problem with Martinez), they can add a whole new dimension to a team. See: Boateng, Varane, Laporte, Marquinhos, Tah, Thiago Silva, Mascherano, Hummels.

Not that I really know eff about high level coaching, but the best coaches and teams in the world love them and are willing to pay crazy money for them.

I'd say there is more demand for your traditional 'get it clear' defenders. Ball playing CBs are a luxury.

I was all for selling him in the summer, but what he did when he moved into midfield and dropped back to sweep was sublime on Sat, we really should look at giving him that role for the rest of the season. He was brilliant for that period.

Think he should take our Pens too:

Exhibit A

You can't judge ANY central defender playing in a side under Roberto Martinez.

He might top class or garbage (I suspect strongly the former rather than the latter), but you just can't gauge it as the influence of Martinez on how sides defend is so decimating that it overwhelms everything else.

Honestly, I'm beginning to re-evaluate my opinion of Gary Caldwell at this point!

Everton’s John Stones was at the Etihad Stadium to take in Manchester City’s Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night.

The central defender watched on during the goalless draw with Real Madrid as talk surrounding his future continues.

Everton will do all they can to retain Stones this summer although he seems likely to depart Goodison Park.

Chelsea and Barcelona are also confirmed admirers of the 21-year-old but remaining in the north-west is his preferred option should he leave the Toffees.

Incoming City boss Pep Guardiola wants defensive reinforcements ahead of next season, with Stones perfectly suited to the Spaniard’s style of play.

Everton held firm with Chelsea during Jose Mourinho’s very public pursuit of the England international last year but will find it tougher this time.

That is particularly pertinent given the uncertainty surrounding Roberto Martinez’s long-term future on Merseyside.

Stones’ form has been scrutinised under Martinez this campaign but he will be at Euro 2016 and Rio Ferdinand leapt to his defence this week.

‘Stones has got fantastic talent, he is naturally gifted with the ball and defensively I see signs that he has got great attributes. It is about moulding it all together,’ Ferdinand told TalkSPORT.

Stones slides in to dispossess Marcus Rashford at Wembley but has come in for criticism at times this season

‘His problem is he is making mistakes at the moment and it is in the public eye and people are on him. But you have got to be able to make mistakes.

‘The big thing he has got to learn is that not to make the same mistakes again. If you keep making the same mistakes, then people are going to have cause to question whether you should be in the England squad.

‘But he is knowledgeable enough, he seems like a sensible lad that and in time he will get it right and choose when to play.’
