If Martinez stays then Stones needs to get away from this club as quickly as possible to get his development back on track.

I hope to God it doesn't come to that because this lad has got the talent and potential to go all the way to the top, but staying here with Martinez at the helm is career suicide for any young defender.

I think it's too late to convince him to stay now sadly, with the way he was managed this season.

Can't blame him

I'd say there is more demand for your traditional 'get it clear' defenders. Ball playing CBs are a luxury.

get it clear defenders are everywhere mate he is right never see wes morgan linked with barca stones if he can be taught by a better manager can become one of the best in the world we are lucky to have him

Get it clear defenders are everywhere because it's a tried and tested model for that position. Interesting how Stones is always 'linked' with Barcelona - got any proof they're actually interested in him?

exactly thats why if they can get someone who doesnt kick it out or lose it every time they get it and defend as well there better to have cause there rare

Eh? You might not have noticed but it's Stones who is criticised for not kicking it out and losing it. You might also not have noticed that Wes Morgan is on the brink of winning the league.

Stones's type is rare because they're not desired.

Pique is a really good defender and leader for Barca, but is far more defender than footballer.
Utd had Ferdinand with a genuine defender in Vidic alongside him and Staam before that.

If you are going to play a footballing centrehalf you had better have a decent defender alongside him.

The one note that makes sense is that Stones needs guidance. Talent ? Probably. But he's got to support his mates a bit better and keep his mouth shut. I liked a recent article that said a good defender is about what they don't do as much as it is what they do. One thing is for sure. He was playing way too high in the FA cup semi and was schooled by Tony Martial. And yes, the rest of the defensive line was crap on the play and hung Phil out to dry, so it wasn't just him. I'll say one thing. If he does go by transfer, some team should be getting a bargain. No doubt.

I think its rubbish that Stones can't defend. He can, and often very well. His positioning is poor, and he is mediocre in the air, but his blocks, tackles and interceptions are exceptional.

The reason his type are so desired, especially at his age, is that they CAN play it out. He needs to learn a balance. His type are capable of booting it too, he just needs to learn when to do so. Wes Morgan technically isn't good enough to bring the ball out from the back. As such Stones can offer a lot more in the future for any team that takes him. Even if he is less effective at this point of his career.

All of which continues to tell me he's a defensive midfielder. I know you can't predict the future, but I just can't envisage him conquering his positioning and heading weaknesses.

I guess I don't understand why we don't embrace the skills he has in spades and put him in midfield, rather than persist with him in defence and hope he can sort out his deficiencies.
