Roy Hodgson's Everton snub is a silver lining
Ross Barkley and John Stones breath sigh of relief at Euro snub

Bark.jpg

Substitutes Kyle Walker, Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and Ross Barkley sing the national anthem prior to the Group B match against Slovakia.
Just two outfield players failed to play a single minute of England's abject Euro 2016 campaign.

And for that Ross Barkley and John Stones should be eternally grateful.

The humiliation by Iceland – yes, Iceland, the country of 330,000 and whose national sport is handball – will scar the careers of all who were part of it.

The unused Everton duo should be relieved their fingerprints are nowhere near the biggest footballing crime perpetrated on this country for 66 years.

The players involved against Iceland may not have David Beckham style effigies created to taunt them, but the mental scars will still be deep set.

And the hangovers could endure for some time.

Is Anfield's worst, Roy Hodgson, now England's worst?
At least the Everton duo will return to pre-season training with their reputations intact.

Roy Hodgson's refusal to use John Stones was understandable, given the youngster's unconvincing campaign with the Blues, but his decision not to take Phil Jagielka was baffling.

The Everton captain was never going to be used in France, but Barkley could have been.

Against Slovakia, with England toiling to break down a well organised and resilient rearguard, Hodgson reintroduced two players he had chosen to rest.

Wayne Rooney and Dele Alli added nothing new.

Against Iceland, Hodgson opted for the clearly not match-sharp Jack Wilshere.

Barkley was left chewing gum in the dug-out.

Throughout his short England career there has been a suspicion that Ross Barkley's maverick talents weren't trusted by his manager.

But trailing 2-1 to the land of fire and ice, with Wayne Rooney misplacing every pass he attempted and Dele Alli's intelligent runs being largely ignored, Barkley's ability to drive at a defence and pick out a pass would have been useful.

They were ignored.

But rather than grind his teeth in frustration, Barkley should breath a sigh of relief.

Criticised by some of his club's supporters last season, the last thing he needed was to be part of a national calamity.

Every French cloud has a silver lining.

Similar stance to Rom. If clubs want him they pay the asking price. Need to be building our team around these players if we can

I think out of the two of them Rom stays. Our asking price is going to be through the roof and I don't think anyone will match it. He is going to have to put his head down and play. I would love to keep Stones so he can learn from Koeman but I think the Mancs want him bad enough and he wants to go there

Just put a price out there, officially. Why not? Have a word with Stones, tell him there is an asking price of 55m right now for him and if any team is prepared to pay it it's down to him whether he makes the move or not.

Calm him down by offering a new deal on better terms with a release fee of 45m from this time next year.

Same for Lukaku, but with 70m fee set for now, and 60m if he signs a new deal and commits to us until somebody is prepared to buy him out of his contract next year.

I agree out of the two Stones will leave for either Manchester club. I think it may be City myself.

Manchester City are reportedly set to bid for John Stones (right)
Stones, 22, has been targeted by both Manchester clubs and is believed to be eyeing a move away from Everton.

The centre-back tried and failed to engineer a move to Chelsea last summer, with the Blues supposedly now not interested in his signature.
Everton want a reported £45million for their young star
.
And the Manchester Evening News claim City are ready to make the move happen.

According to the report, bosses at the Etihad Stadium are now free to bid for Stones after his duties with the England side ended with their 2-1 defeat to Iceland on Monday.

Stones is back in the UK after flying home with the England squad and the report claims a deal could soon be in place for the Barnsley academy product to join Pep Guardiola's new side.

United manager Jose Mourinho is said to be a fan of Stones but the club are not believed to be in a position to make an immediate offer.

Mourinho, 53, is assessing his options after already agreeing a deal to sign Eric Bailly in a £30m swoop from Villarreal, with more moves expected after the transfer window opens on July 1.

City will also hope to conclude Nolito's £13.8m arrival from Celta Vigo following Spain's exit from the Euros.

As for Everton, they are said to be battling Stoke in the race to sign Swiss defender Leo Lacroix.

The 24-year-old FC Sion centre-back is supposedly available at the right price and has been earmarked as a possible replacement for Stones.

The papers don't know anything. To indicate that City are now free to bid for him because he's back from international duty is nonsense seeing as it was plain for all to see that Arsenal made an offer for Vardy during the tournament. I would expect a bid to come in sooner rather than later though personally but I won't pay attention to the papers to find out when.

I think he'll go which is a shame because working under a great defender like Koeman might be the thing to make him the worldy we know he could be and whilst i don't think any amount of money will replace him like for like we can get another CB or two in that will defend just as well if not better at times.

Think he's gone unfortunately. Would love to of kept him as I think he's destined for big things.

If City can pay 50m for Sterling then they can pay even more for Stones.

Resigned that he's gone I think. Thankfully under Koeman the centre half and goalkeeper positions and defensive structure should be vastly improved so he may not be hugely missed. Having said that I'd love for him to stay and spray boss passes as we rip teams apart under New Age Everton

sad day for me if he does leave. That is the type of player we need to keep. According to The Esk has to go to sort out the FPP rules. But what if Lukaku goes as well.

If Lukaku goes as well its one step forward two steps back but if Stones going means we are certain to keep Rom its all good.
